· "Who does she think she is?" Strangers react to Ann Romney's Marie Antoinette act

"She looks guilty about something"

by digby

I happened to see this clip at my vets office this afternoon and the reaction among the other patrons --- all strangers --- was surprisingly voluble and hostile. One woman made a face and said to her friend, "who does she thinks she is?" A man sitting on the other side of the room said, "if they didn't do anything wrong, they shouldn't be worried." The girl behind the counter said, "she looks guilty about something."

Ann, after all, was beloved after that "didn't work a day in her life" comment went out and she suddenly became the wholesome, "Leave it to Beaver," 50's Mom, staying at home, raising the kids

So now she's been handed the role, along with Ryan, to be, well, Mitt's "beard." Their job is to speak for Mitt, and thus make him seem more human and likable--because he's not liked, but, presumably, they are. In short, the GOP is making the same mistake they made with Palin. Their candidate hasn't got "it" so they're trying to get "it" by proxy. And just as with Palin, they don't realize that they've missed the mark with their proxy (proxies as this includes Ryan). Ann might be beloved so long as she plays the little wife who only talks about her kids and horses and struggles with illness, but get her on taxes and such, and--as with Palin--the truth about what kind of person she really is comes out. And it's clear that she's no more "human" than her husband, and not more likable.

As an employer, when people do not completely fill out their application, I do not even waste my time interviewing them. As a voter, the Romney's are not being transparent while applying for the most influential job in the world, and for that reason alone he does not deserve our votes.

17. This is exactly the Marie Antoinette syndrome.....
Wed Aug 15, 2012, 10:35 PM
Aug 2012

What she has to understand is running for office is not the same as complying the local zoning ordinances....the ordinances states the residential structure must be not less than 40' from the abutment adjacent to the local thoroughfare......this is about people voting for a person that can blow up the world, can significantly impact the lives (and cause the deaths) of tens if not thousands or millions of Americans and others. So to hide behind the "legally required" curtain suggests there is something to hide. The American people, regardless of the legal requirements, are entitled to transparency on the person who is asking for the public trust to lead them for at least 4 years.

I suggest Ann engage in some self-reflection, think about how many inner-city kids could have been fed, how many after-school programs could have been funded off her $77K tax deduction for her horse.

She is the epitome of the 1% that Americans despise, not because of their wealth, but because their arrogance and total appreciation for their position and how that position is not entirely of their making. Regardless of what the f*****ng GOP says, in today's world, there are no self-made men or women. Their success is a product of their own drive, creativity, ingenuity, etc. combined WITH the benefits of our educated workforce, our infrastructure, our economic system, our legal system that protects/limits them from liability, enables them to enforce IP and unfair business practices against competitors, etc.

So Ann, go to bed tonight and pray for your mortal soul because from where I sit it is tarnished. I wouldn't be hoping for a planet in the afterlife where Mittens can keep you eternally pregnant and making babies. I think the afterlife is much less complicated than that.

found on the obama diary in which the author is treating Mitt as if he were applying for a job! Which, as Democrats and anyone else with a brain knows, he is!

"Earl Gray · Top Commenter · Sr. Controls Consultant at Honeywell

Dear Mr. Romney,

We have contacted you now several times regarding your missing tax returns for years ending 2000 through 2011. To date we have only received a partial return for year ending 2010 and a “projection” of taxes for year ending 2011. Unfortunately this is inadequate documentation to evaluate your financial history and allegiances, which are critical to understand your previous behavior.

Given the disappointing Swiss bank accounts and Cayman shell corporations that we have previously discussed, these documents are now critical to better understand your past financial background. This understanding is in turn required in order to make an informed decision regarding your capability to perform the financially sensitive position that you have applied for.

If you have recently released the tax returns for years ending 2000-2011, please accept our sincere apology and we will continue to evaluate your application. If however we do not receive your tax records for the years ending 2000-2011 , we regret that we will be unable to process your application, and unable to consider you for the position for which you have applied.

If this is the case, we want to send our appreciation for your effort and application and encourage you to reapply when you are better able to meet with our admittedly high standards.

Thank You and Best Regards.
The American People."

Although this letter was written tongue in cheek, it is absolutely necessary that Romney release up to date, complete tax returns for national security reasons. Plus it is also a fairness issue and we certainly do not want to set a precedent for others in the future seeking to govern our country.

The fact that he has not done so, and refuses to do so until possibly after the election disqualifies him from the position as president.

Even if the campaign plans to use the, no doubt future, attacks on her as a ploy for sympathy. She was grating and came off as dismissive and elitist. Not traits likely to garner sympathy in the American voter.

They'd do best to shut her up and keep her out if sight as much as possible. Or so I'm inclined to think.

It was apparent from this interview that Queen Ann is used to being in charge. She used measured words, carefully thought out so that she never used the words "Income Taxes". She had been admonished to never let those two words cross her lips.

But I think that the thing that stood out to me was her arrogance and absolute insistence that they would not be releasing any more information regarding their finances. She stated that they had done all that was necessary in order to be in compliance with the requirements ---- although somehow I think the partial information that has been released does not quite fill the bill. It leaves way more questions than answers.

What Ms Highhorse fails to understand is that it is Mitt who is applying for a J-O-B and we are the ones interviewing and evaluating his fitness for said job. She acts as if we all should be grateful for Mittens even considering this job and seems miffed to have to go through the pesky scrutiny of the vetting process.

I have a flash for her, if everything in their tax returns is as she claims.....golden......then there will be NO problem for them. The only way she will have a problem is if it reveals something they don't want us to know.

This is not going to go away just because she demands it. In fact, the more high handed she is about it, the more evasive they are, the more haughty they act, the more they can COUNT ON US HOUNDING THEM ALL THE WAY to Nov. 6th. After that, it will be a non-issue. Thank goodness.

Thu Aug 16, 2012, 07:06 AM
Aug 2012

that popped up from the "little people" for a couple of weeks then went away. It was never in their plans to still be talking about it.

"We have given you our answer so be good little people and stop asking now"

The problem is that the answer is insufficient. The little people have the audacity to think they have some "right to know", so the subject will not die.

The Romneys did not learn the lesson from Kerry and the SBVT, or the Obama BC. From Kerry, making light of a question, even a ridiculous one, and not answering for weeks is a losing strategy. From the Obama BC, even the most absurd questions, even when fully addressed, never go away anymore. (and this question is legit, so it is even worse)

The tone and timbre of both her and Mitt's rhetoric of late indicate one thing very clearly, they are losing and they are beginning to fully understand this.

The Obama camp is very good at one thing and has been since it first came on the scene. Highlighting an opponent's weaknesses and steadily picking away at them. Ryan is a gold mine in this regard, so there will be more to come.

Michelle Obama has come across so personable. I love the idea of the garden created at the White House and honestly, it inspired me to put one in my backyard. Michelle Obama invites local school kids to the garden to have them learn about garden and eating healthy. I know that the vegetables grown go to cooking the meals at the White House and extras are donated to local charities. Heck just the other day I learned that there are Bee Hives at the garden and that the honey harvested from them has been used to brew beer served at the White House.

If Romney was elected I could see all of that being bulldozed so Ann could build a car garage or put a barn in for half million dollar horses. I doubt local kids would be invited to see those things.

As much as I was not a fan of Nancy Reagan or or any of the Bush First Ladies - even they came across more caring than Ann Romney.

(probably better to ask "how many", or make a poll of it)

She (and Mitt, and Mitt, and his proxies) always go on about how they've released what they are legally required.

"What's legally required" is a minimum requirement, it's the "you must be this tall to get on this ride" level. When Mitt made hiring decisions at Bain, how many people did he hire who only gave the bare minimum they could get away with? How many investments did Mitt make where the prospectus said "we have nothing to hide, just trust us on this"?

"There's nothing we're hiding." Marvelous! Of course, Ronald Reagan famously said "trust, but verify", right? We'd like to verify.

Seems like I remember just a few weeks ago (or earlier this summer) they were touting HER as the one person he could count on to help us "know him better"....to humanize him....and to help rid us of the impression that he is cold, stiff and humorless.

WOW! If she is the antidote to that, gak! She looks just as uptight and uncomfortable as him when she is talking about their tax situation. After watching that interview, I have a very sneaking suspicion thatthere is more that they are not telling us----a LOT more.

Just release the returns and we'll be judge of whether they have anything to hide. We do not and SHOULD NOT have to take their word for it. They would not tolerate that from the Obama side and, in fact, would be floating rumors that they are hiding something.

I recall back in the '60s when Nixon was running for president. My mother got so mad because Pat Nixon slipped a statement to the press that she wasn't about to go back to wearing cloth coats if the Dick lost the election.

I'm guessing it was a case of political gamesmanship, but the release of that statement was very effective at the time. "Who does she think she is" was on the lips of every Democratic housewife like my mom.

I hope the Dems use this clip accordingly.
