Here's why Dems should impeach, even if they can't get 67 votes in the Senate

a. Because the trial in the Senate would expose everything in the Mueller report to the public. It could not be hidden. All of Trump's crimes need to be exposed to the public.

b. Because all GOP Senators need to be put on the record with their vote to acquit, for the ones that do. 22 GOP senators are up for re-election in 2020. We need them to sweat... to have to defend their vote to acquit Trump in their states.

Let's see Susan Collins (ME), Corey Gardner (CO), Joni Ernst (IA), David Perdue (GA), Bill Cassidy (LA), Thom Tillis (NC) all try to defend their votes to acquit Trump (if they do). They are all in states that are blue or purple.

With Trump trying to kill the Mueller investigation... the only way we can get all his crimes public would be through an impeachment trial.

Unlike in 1998-99 when the GOP was trying to impeach a popular President for lying about an affair.... this would be Democrats impeaching an UNPOPULAR President for acts that amount to treason. Real crimes.

We need to do it. Especially if Mueller is neutered.

when the Senate will surely declare Trump innocent. I don't see it. Not about dry powder but about doing things that have some benefit to our party and to the country and will help preserve the country by stopping Trump from winning another term.

As there aren't enough votes in the Senate...

Our representatives should speak out, and stand up for the constitution, and put all evidence against this president front and center for the electorate to examine, to stare down this would be dictator, and draw a line in the sand and say "no more!". If that's "too risky", then the US is broken, and doomed.

Articles of impeachment could be drawn up, one by one, without formal hearings in the full body of the house, while the Dem congress multi-tasks and passes Medicare For All, a minimum wage increase, and a budget balancing tax hike on the 1%.

All of this would hold the GOP senate and Trump accountable, while deflating Trump's approval ratings and diminishing his chances of reelection.

In 1999, Clinton was a POPULAR President being impeached for lying about sex.

(And in 2000, the GOP won the Presidency anyway.)

Now, Trump is an UNPOPULAR President who would be impeached for actual crimes, including treasonous ones.

No comparison.

The trial would drive his numbers through the floor.... only the most hardened MAGA would still be with him in 2020.

However what do we gain with impeachment? Unless conviction follows...exactly nothing. Thus no reason to risk it. Plenty of other useful things we can do that won't get us tossed out of office.

16. Whoa!
Fri Nov 9, 2018, 05:36 PM
Nov 2018

We can impeach, BUT, in the current state of things, we will fail to convict and this will immediately get twisted, by Trump and friends, into a verdict of innocent. This will make him stronger.

Surely investigations by various House committees can bring out the facts just as well and without such unfortunate consequences as a failed impeachment.

The GOP knew they wouldn't get Clinton convicted. They still did it, and won the next election.

Brand Trump with it. He'll lie about whatever Dems do, regardless. Might as well go down fighting the bully.

I don't agree that Impeachment helps his re-election chances. At worst it's neutral.

But we should impeach because of the reasons you listed plus one more: its just the right thing to do. It might not be politically savvy and it probably will die in the Senate but I don't care. Its what should be done.

We'll indict him in the courts, but lets do this too.

Republicans did not impeach Obama even though they likely could have come up with something. Of course we wouldn't agree but then Republicans wouldn't agree with the impeachment of Trump either.
Impeachment of Trump is a bad idea which just opens Democrats up to getting bit in the ass by the Law of Unintended Consequences.
