Over the last four years, Republicans ruled Maine through control of its state Senate and governor, Paul LePage, who has described his style as Trump before there was Trump. Conflicts with the Democrat-controlled House and attorney general led to lawsuits flying nearly every month and, eventually, a government shutdown when there was no budget all amid LePages stream of provocative name-calling that garnered national headlines.
But on Tuesday, in the greatest shift in partisan makeup of a state government in the United States this year, voters chose Democrat Janet Mills to replace a term-limited LePage and gave her party control of both chambers.

(6,496 posts)but it will be much nicer with LePage out of here. He had an awful attitude. He made Mainers look bad. People that aren't familiar with us thought we were all tea party loons up here with him as governor. I don't know how many times I've tried to explain on here how it is in Maine... all the independents that run and that the majority of Mainers never approved of LePage. People from out of state don't seem to get it. You can wind up with someone like LePage that most people don't like when the moderate/liberal voters are divided among 2 or 3+ candidates.

(31,261 posts)Lead thoughtfully and lead well, buries republicans there forever. Democrats already have a big registration advantage in the state.
Didn't next door in New Hampshire, the Legistlature there flipped big from red to blue on Tuesday?

(6,496 posts)He was the original asshole tea party governor. The message the Republican party should take out this is the majority of Mainers are sick of politicians like LePage and Trump. The majority never liked LePage to begin with and yet we were stuck with him for 8 years. This is why Mainers have fought so hard to get our new Ranked Choice Voting system... to save ourselves from extreme politicians like him in the future.
