obtain the funds to do so? Most sites you go to either (1) you pay anyways and still get the ads (2) you don't pay and you get ads (3) you don't pay you don't get to post, or anything. DU at least gives you a choice. Your choice.

Is it extortion when the newspaper or a magazine print ads? Shit, we get all this content for FREE in exchange for some irritating ad banners, which seems fine by me. Bandwidth and servers ain’t free.

in economic circumstances over the last two years I’ve just learned to live with the ads, but I will admit these new drop-down variety are quite a bit more irritating than the old ones.

Unfortunately it’ll be at least several months before I’m in a position to get a star again.

It was so worth it to me. Since DFT was elected, I have also been spending money towards:
* New York Times
* Washington Post
* Guardian (British newspaper)
* Southern Poverty Law Center
* American Civil Liberties Union

I retired 6 yrs ago. NEVER was asked to pay to speak. Until now? To avoid popups? Surely a notification should have gone out. I'll think about paying. Free speech isn't really free, I suppose...new world.

I post a lot and I’m not a Star Member at the moment. A site this big is an expensive beast to run and the principals deserve recompense for their hours. Some folks pay directly, others by being exposed to ads that generate income for the owners.

What a weird thing to be out-of-sorts about. The internet is absolutely replete with ads. For that matter the newspaper that you pay for, the magazines you pay for, and the television that you (likely) pay for are all conduits for advertising.
