I have no words.
President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced his intention to nominate Lana Marks, a luxury handbag designer, as the U.S. ambassador to South Africa. She is also a member of the presidents exclusive Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, multiple outlets reported.
Marks has no prior diplomatic experience. She was born and raised in South Africa and, according to the White House, speaks Afrikaans and Xhosa, two languages spoken in the nation.
The post, which requires Senate approval, has been vacant since former Ambassador Patrick Gaspard resigned in 2016.
Marks launched her eponymous handbag label after she was unable to locate a red alligator handbag to match the suit she planned to wear aboard the royal yacht Britannia for Queen Elizabeth IIs birthday celebration in 1984, according to her website.

For what it's worth, it appears that she is a 1953 native of South Africa and lived there for quite a number of years, so one might imagine that she is directly familiar with the relevant time period.
While any Trump appointee is virtually guaranteed to come with baggage, the characterization of her as "handbag designer" appear to be somewhat less than her actual qualifications, whatever they may be.
"She served on the Womens Leadership Board at the Harvard Kennedy School and the Womens International Forum for more than a decade. Ms. Marks attended the University of the Witwatersrand and the Institute of Personnel Management in Johannesburg, South Africa. She speaks Afrikaans and Xhosa."
