(4,033 posts)Most of them are 'closed groups', meaning they have to approve you, they have rules, and they can boot you if you don't follow their rules.
Just about every group I belong to is dedicated to telling stories about and sharing pics of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. And every group has among its rules a "Do NOT discuss politics" one that will get you booted out of the group faster than you can say 'tRump stinks'.
Anyone who sends me a 'fake news' or a pro-tRump post immediately gets unfriended and blocked.
Works like a champ for me. YMMV

(11,552 posts)Facebook is a platform that requires regulation. It is naive to think they would self-regulate. It is more likely a tired and hungry toddler would self-regulate in a candy store.

(343 posts)Maybe it is my age. But I lived most of my life by people coming and going out of it. You worked with people, you met people, you dated people. And if they were really good friends, you stayed in touch. Everybody else drifted away. I liked it like that. Just because you worked with somebody years ago does not mean they are still your "friend" - people change. Maybe you have changed. Maybe you don't want to know them anymore. Whatever the case, being in some internet world with some asshole from High School that you never liked much to begin with is nuts. Keep in touch with good friends and everybody else forget them.

(16,844 posts)I did Facebook several years ago for about 6 months, and that was all I could stand. I didn't know much about it when I set up an account and I got inundated with messages from old acquaintances and distant relatives who I didn't really want in my life. I just quit signing into my account and left it alone. I've been told by others that there are people asking about me, but I just tell them to tell those people that I quit Facebook and I'm doing just fine.

(33,310 posts)Its the big kid on the block. Google, not Bing or Alta Vista. Yet they, like Obama, were afraid of the RW Noise Machine: "They'll accuse us of bias!"
They'd accuse you of raping your mother if they thought they'd gain an advantage. Might as well tell them to piss off.
Hopefully FB learned some sort of lesson, but I don't have a lot of faith, either.
