Maxine Waters wants to investigate Trump, but her party may resist

More moderate Democrats fear that oversight investigations will be a distraction or cause political blowback for the party.

https://www.politico.com/story/2018/11/19/maxine-waters-investigate-trump-1000430?nname=playbook&nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&nrid=0000014e-f0fa-dd93-ad7f-f8ffe0400000&nlid=630318

Rep. Maxine Waters is running into an unexpected obstacle in her bid to investigate a president who has mocked her as a “low IQ person”: members of the California Democrat's own party.

Waters, the incoming chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee, has promised to follow the “Trump money trail,” targeting the Trump Organization’s hundreds of millions in loans from Deutsche Bank, the German lender that has been under scrutiny in connection with Russian money laundering. But the committee has a handful of moderates who worry that such aggressive moves will backfire.

“The American people will understand thoughtful, well-grounded investigations," said Rep. Jim Himes, a Connecticut Democrat. “But they will bridle at investigations that seem overtly political." That tension between cautious Democrats and those who want to train their subpoena firepower at the White House is being repeated throughout the House, as establishment veterans face off against progressives out for revenge against President Donald Trump.

While much of the base wants lawmakers to take on Trump and big corporations that have benefited from his tax cuts and deregulation, more moderate members fear that oversight investigations will be a distraction or cause political blowback for the party. They want to see a policy focus instead and don't want to be pulled too far to the left.

New Democrat Coalition chairman won‘t say whether he‘ll back Pelosi for speaker

Rep. Jim Himes, D-4th District, said he and more than 60 other members of a centrist group of Democrats called the New Democrat Coalition, which includes Courtney and retiring Rep. Elizabeth Esty, D-5th District, also want to hear from Pelosi about her agenda for the next Congress before they make a decision on whom they will support.

“I haven’t made any commitments on any level,” of House leadership, Himes said.

Himes hopes to chair the House Intelligence Committee in the next Congress. Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., is the highest-ranking Democrat on that committee, which is expected to reopen the investigation into Russian election interference during the 2016 campaign and conduct other probes of the Trump administration next year.

However, the intelligence panel is a special congressional committee whose membership is term limited and Schiff would need a waiver – from the House Speaker — to stay on the panel and become its chairman.

1. Politico trying to frame the conversation is obvious

By contrasting Maxine with the "cautious" and "moderate" wing of the party it is slyly saying she is neither. They are implying that Maxine should "listen to the adults in the room." Fuck them! Maxine is cautious, moderate, smart, patriotic and righteous!

She will not back down from this orange asshole.

Reclaiming her time!

8. Framing is important.

We are seeing this from various stories including this one and stories about Ocasio-Cortez, where the media is framing the situation as an "aggressive" or "fringe" or "insurgent" faction is being pitted against the "moderate" group of congresspeople.

I can even say that I understand that caution about not wanting the investigations to appear overtly political. Well, everything is political because it is politics and government. HOWEVER, there is a legitimate reason to be looking into the situation because Trump's actions indicate that there is wrongdoing. If the investigations and evidence show that nothing is happening, then Democrats, unlike Republicans, will cease and move on to other things because that is how Democrats govern.

4. yes!! plus 1

And if even a large plurality of 60 member New Democrat Coalition go anti-Pelosi, that puts 218 way out of reach. The centrists seem to be trying to pull a major power play here. Not happy with this.

Schiff out as head the HIC would be a major blow as well, as you already said.

6. If you reverse the parties, and had a newly empowered Republican House with HRC as POTUS

and it would be a one-sided instant nuclear war. There would ZERO Rethugs calling for a backing off.

We are not even talking about impeachment, just simple investigation and oversight on the traitor Trump and it already seems a bridge too far for some (most?) of the centrists.

9. Follow the money

Anyone who wouldn't want to follow the money in and out of DeutscheBank is a fool.

This is the strand that will unravel not only Trump's ties to the Russian oligarchs, but also to the far more dangerous appointment of Kavenaugh to SCOTUS.

That money trail will show (probably) in no particular order

1) Loans that should never have been given to Trump by Scalea's son which in turn leads to the
2) Pre-bribery of DJT which leads to Scalea
3) hand picking a serial sexual assaulte who was in over his eyeballs in debt which somehow ...
4) was magically paid off when his credit card debt alone was more than a year's salary which leads to
5) tax evasion, gift law violation, and pre-bribery of a SC Justice which will lead to
6) how did the background checks miss red flags for financials of more than a quarter million dollars which leads to
7) DJT probably telling the FBI not to examine financials in the first background check, much like limiting the witness list in the second check which leads to
8) obstruction of justice because Kavenaugh was pre-bribed to rule that POTUS cannot be indicted or subpoenaed which leads to ...
9) RICO charges for the whole lot starting with the Trump family, the Scalea family, and whatever idiot at DOJ that signed off on two limited background checks (you have money laundering, bribery, tax evasion, and obstruction of justice in order to cover previous crimes)...

Anyone who wants to know the real truth of how far this cancer goes needs to follow the money all the way to every crime.
