Anyway, wish he would have taken a break instead of going this long with a problem. Emotions have been high around here since the mid-terms. I've been the victim of some vicious attacks for things that, well, if I showed you, you'd be shocked that such an inoffensive post would elicit what came my way. Like I say, emotions and passions have been high lately.
Or maybe his photos were taking up too much bandwidth/space in the server?

(22,942 posts)I joined the same day as Will, in 2001. Over the last almost 18 years, I've seen DU go through a lot of ups and downs. I don't think we recovered as a community from the great purge of 2016. Then and since then, we've lost a lot of good people forever. Oddly, there are people among us who still congratulate themselves or otherwise celebrate about that. Who needs Russian bots, right?
I don't know the future of DU. I suspect it will cruise along for some time. I submit, it would be a better ride if we listened and learned from each other more. I think we did that more when it was a smaller community.
I just knew WP didn't come here any more and now neither does DemoTex. (and I notice N2Doc is gone too.)

(37,648 posts)There are some extremists who go around alerting anything that's not praise for their favorite politicians. I mean, really. Even just a reference to a prior mistake by the politician (none of us is perfect, right?) elicits them swarming on the post with alerts. It's bizarre.
I've alerted just a few times in the over-a-decade time that I've been a member. It should be a rare thing, IMO, intended for extreme posts, or on possible conservative trolls. But that's just my opinion.

Anyone who is eligible to be a forum host can join the group to determine who made the alert and who voted to lock the thread posted in GD. Information that is in the Forum Host and MIRT groups is not considered private.
While demotex overreacted with his subsequent threads and I understand that the juries had no other choice to hide those threads, the facts corroborate that his accusation was accurate.
I've served as a forum host and on MIRT so I know that I'll most likely get a hide for interfering with forum moderation, but I don't believe that it should be hidden that one of the forum hosts is responsible for sending the alert that resulted in the locked thread in GD and that the truth be told.

I only saw one of the threads, and I alerted on it. It was inappropriate... but, more importantly, he gave out his own personal phone number/internet email info (DU has a a small group of crazy types following every move). It didn't get hidden. I am assuming the admins made an executive decision regarding that particular post.
Anywho, I will miss his pics.
TexasTowelie
(127,193 posts)There are obvious locks such as duplicates and news over 12 hours old in LBN, or discussions specifically prohibited in some forums such as no guns, religion, I/P in GD. The number of hosts has increased over the past couple of days which is great since it stimulates more discussion on the alerts that are of a more subjective nature.
I also agree with the decisions made by the juries. The juries had no other alternative than to hide the threads after the thread in GD was locked.
While I didn't know Demotex as well as some DUers, I shared a few conversations with him and certainly enjoyed his photography and stories. I'm saddened that an alert for a humorous post escalated to an FFR.

(6 posts)I'm a looooong time lurker on this site and never have time to post but gosh - I HAVE to take the time tonight to say that I will sorely miss DemoTex's photos. They were fabulous and I thoroughly enjoyed every one. Always original - I kept my eye open for his posts so I wouldn't miss any - I believe he is a true artist with a camera. I especially loved the photos from the mountains when he was a spotter in the fire watch towers. He gave us spectacular photos and insight into his service on the mountain. (12,101 posts)Friends Without Faces
We sit and we type,
and we stare at our screens,
We all have to wonder,
what this possibly means.
With our mouse we roam,
through the rooms in a maze,
Looking for something or someone,
as we sit in a daze.
We chat with each other,
we type all our woes,
Small groups we do form,
and gang up on our foes.
We wait for somebody,
to type out our name,
We want recognition,
but it is always the same.
We give kisses and hugs,
and sometimes flirt,
In IMs we chat deeply,
and reveal why we hurt.
We do form friendships
- but - why we don't know,
But some of these friendships,
will flourish and grow.
Why is it on screen,
we can be so bold,
Telling our secrets,
that have never been told.
Why is it we share,
the thoughts in our mind,
With those we can't see,
as though we were blind.
The answer is simple,
it is as clear as a bell.
We all have our problems,
and need someone to tell.
We can't tell "real" people,
but tell someone we must,
So we turn to the 'puter,
and to those we can trust.
Even though it is crazy,
the truth still remains,
They are Friends Without Faces,
and odd little names.

(40,342 posts)DemoTex actually can't resign from DU or delete his accoun as his account has been flagged for review. The only thing he can do i think is update the "about me" section of his profile.
Loved his pics and enjoyed his posts.

(37,648 posts)I won't go into why. But I know how he feels. Maybe he can sit out for a while, and return later, when things have cooled down (from whatever happened).
I hope he returns. It's not good to lose people who have been participating and contributing positively for a long time. That's exactly who we need here.

(20,868 posts)The software behind the jury system is laudable and understandable with so many posts, but it could perhaps do with an appeal of last resort to catch issues such as this.
Best of luck to you, Demotex.

(156,595 posts)I got a message from DemoTex today. He asked me to let all of you know this:
DemoTex has resigned from DU.
Nothing more, nothing less.
If anyone is interested, I am authorized to tell you where you can find him.
On edit: he can still read DU, and he is reading this thread. He appreciates all your responses.
