General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHi new member ,I guess this is me in a nutshell
I support Medicare and Medicaid - no cuts or changes like Romney and Ryan want.
I think government should stay out of our bedrooms and personal lives.
I agree with private property rights ( smoking ban in bars is government stepping over the line)
I think the war on drugs is a failure and should be stopped. Make them legal
I think we should down size the military .
I do not support anymore wars , bring everyone home.
I support the 2nd amendment .
I support a womens right to choose .
I support marriage for anyone in this country of any sex.
I support unions and a living wage paid to employees.
I support the Obamas health care bill.
I hope that I will fit in here . I find my self more and more not agreeing with the GOP views.

(8,127 posts)smoking is a personal choice that involves your own body.
i think most people like smoking bans in public areas because they arent choosing to smoke, but are having too whether they like it or not.
we still have smoking sections where i live, and some are put off to the side and really are away from other people... these seem fine to me..but ive also been in places where there is no divide at all.. and smoke just goes up to the roof n and travels wherever it wants from there... lol..
its a tricky area tho, dealing with private businesses...so i can understand your hesitation. slippery slope, and all that. easier tho when dealing with public land.
i wouldnt object to big warnings. probably should put them on anything thats harmful, frankly. people have a right to be informed as much as possible.
Oh, and welcome to DU

slowly and painfully from the direct effects of of smoking and second hand smoke you will wish they would have banned cigarettes years ago.
"Our jails are full of people that have harmed no one?" Do you think they are in there because,
maybe, they sang too loud in church?
All that said, welcome to DU.

The drug laws do much more harm than the drugs.
That's an easy call with pot, but we would be much better off viewing the hard drugs as a public health problem than a criminal issue.
You can't control much by outlawing it, but you can by cutting the profit out of it. If addicts could get cheap, prescribed drugs--or, for that matter, entirely legal drugs--the drug cartels would starve & the addicts would have lots less incentive to commit secondary crimes to support their habits.

(15,667 posts)I do respectfully disagree with your smoking thing though because it's really brutal for people who wait tables (or sing!) to have to breathe in the smoke the whole shift. True they don't HAVE to work where there is smoking allowed but the reality is the customer is always right and there would be whole regions where you could not get such a job without sacrificing your health. I remember working in clubs before the smoking ban, coming home and washing my hair and the next day it STILL smelled like smoke!
former-republican
(2,163 posts)I still don't agree with it but I respect it.
I think that owners should make the choice on this not the government or state. Again this is only on private property.
I would go to a smoking bar , many would go to a non smoking one.
There's enough room for both .
I believe that entire regions would have smoking and non smoking venues .
A person would be able to work either one.

(3,747 posts)They invite everyone in and in that respect, I'm delighted that there is a ban on smoking in public places such as restaurants and bars. I hate that people can smoke right outside the doorway of buildings...it's like running a cigarette smoke gauntlet.
But, I'm delighted you are here. It's good to see that we as humanity have a chance, you're proof.

(15,667 posts)For cocktail waitresses and other bar workers to not put their lungs at risk. When a smoker lights up everyone around him breathes in carcinigens; in truth, before the ban, no bars would ban smoking because smoking and drinking are often twin addictions, but I do feel that smokers have adjusted to the "step outside" thing pretty well. Here in L.A. they have "smoker's lounges" and patios etc.

(6,335 posts)A Day in the Life of Joe Republican-John Gray
Joe gets up at 6:00 AM to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot full of good clean drinking water because some liberal fought for minimum water quality standards. He takes his daily medication with his first swallow of coffee. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to insure their safety and work as advertised.
All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employers medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance, now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs this day. Joes bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.
Joe takes his morning shower reaching for his shampoo; His bottle is properly labeled with every ingredient and the amount of its contents because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree hugging liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government subsidized ride to work; it saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.
Joe begins his work day; he has a good job with excellent pay, medicals benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe's employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.
It's noon time, Joe needs to make a Bank Deposit so he can pay some bills. Joes deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some liberal wanted to protect Joes money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the depression.
Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae underwritten Mortgage and his below market federal student loan because some stupid liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his life-time.
Joe is home from work, he plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive to dad's; his car is among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. He was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electric until some big government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification. (Those rural Republicans would still be sitting in the dark.)
He is happy to see his dad who is now retired. His dad lives on Social Security and his union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to.
After his visit with dad he gets back in his car for the ride home.
He turns on a radio talk show. The host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. (He doesn't tell Joe that his beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day)
Joe agrees. "We don't need those big government liberals ruining our lives; after all, I'm a self made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have."

(95 posts)I'm encouraged by all the replies to your introduction. I never got that memo, and have only been here a few times. I don't input a lot because I find that I end up reading for hours sometimes just to take it all in! It is a great forum.
I agree with every issue you list, including the smoking ban. I was a smoker for 45 years and quit only a few years ago, so I am empathetic to the non-smoker issues as well. If we stop approaching it through the veil of right/wrong we could make great strides in coming to an equitable solution. But then - isn't that applicable to so many issues we come at with swords drawn instead of a yearning to find compatible solutions?
My interpretation of the second amendment, however, doesn't usually agree with other interpretations, so when I agree with you on supporting the 2nd amendment, I do that with that codicil attached. (On a similar note, I have been told by some that my 14th amendment thoughts are different from some as well! But that's another issue and not for this topic.)
What are your favorite topics? There are so many here, and most of the threads are so interesting, that it is hard to check them all out. In addition to all of the other great topics, I love the fact that politics and religion are not taboo as they are on many sites. I love a spirited debate about both - without stooping to name-calling and hate-mongering. Spouting hate turns me off to anything that might follow.
Welcome....hope to read your thoughts one day. Literally.

I'm a hunter and gun owner. I joined the NRA as a lifetime member when I was young.
I became a 1 issue voter on this topic. It trumped other issues for me.
As my father grew older I saw how much medicare , social security was needed to protect our elderly.
I saw hard working close Friends lose their jobs in the last few years through no fault of their own.. I witnessed first hand
how important it is to have compassion and a safety net for our fellow country men.
I was of the mind before welfare , food stamps was only for lazy people.
But that is not the case for many people in our country. There's other things also but I don't want to be long winded.
