Answer: Simply because the Russians mobsters, oligarchs, and connected thugs used the
Trump properties to launder their money and get it out of Russia so a Trump project in Russia
isn't much help to them.
OK I might be wrong but this makes sense to me.

Putin is supposed to be the richest man in the world but President Obama's
sanctions have tied up much of his riches hence his work in getting Trump
into the White House.

(32,594 posts)... so it was worthless to them for money-laundering. However the oligarchs discovered that it was a major incentive for Trump and that's why they kept pushing it. Trump is like Pavlov's dog, salivating at the thought of a Trump Tower Moscow. He'd do anything to get it, including selling out his own country. I believe Felix Sater was instrumental in getting this project off the ground, so he was working both sides, secretly reporting back to Putin whenever he could.
