(1,777 posts)AVS is quite routine and highly successful these days. It used to be nip and tuck.
My mother had it in June '17. Pig valve! She was out in a day, her recovery went well, no complications--and it saved her life.
All will go well and be well!

I'm sure everything will be fine. I ended up in the emergency and wound up ok after a triple-bypass.

(6,353 posts)your husband. If it doesnt look right say something. My mother passed away 15 years ago during placement of 1 stent. Myself, my father and brother, all lawyers who know something about medicine all stood there and watched as my mother bled to death. She should not have died. It made such an impression on my son that he decided to go to medical school and wants to be a cardiologist. I wish you luck and alll the best.

(31,835 posts)I'm sending healing juju your way. I have been in the hospital, off and on, with mom for four days. She's had surgery twice now, once the 27th and again today. An ultrasound she had in the ED revealed a cyst full of ecoli on one of her kidneys, that was six times the size of the kidney. We are so lucky she didn't go into septic shock.
I truly hope that the doctors in your husband's case are able to help him as much as the doctors here have helped mom.
Thinking of you, murielm99.

(195 posts)I had the same surgery in June, now having a cow valve (yes, really). It went well, and I am now in pretty decent shape to hang around another couple of decades. The first weeks are not easy, as everything hurts from having your chest opened up the same way they pop the hood of a car, but I had no memory loss or other side effects, so that went about as well as it could. It takes a little working through, and you have to be patient. Cardiac Rehab is a great idea, and a good way to get back normal function and flexibility, even if it starts a bit slow. For the first couple of months, I was good for about 4-6 hours a day, then napping again. OK now though, and up to walking and doing pretty much as I like.

(2,746 posts)... and I'm still kicking. I had lots of other surgeries - I beat up my body pretty good - and this was the worst. I say that not to scare you, but to prepare you.
It's one of those bungee-jump things. NOT a roller-coaster... that's too smooth. The ups are really high, and the downs are really down.
Luckily, the best hotshots in the business, from the nurses and doctors to the most modern equipment is there to take care of him. The surgeons are megalomaniacs who will NOT let their patients die! The nurses have seen it all before, and are totally cool with the setbacks and are ready for them.
Think of it this way. Without surgery i had 2 months to live.... probably the same with your husband. Now I bike 20 miles with no sweat....about 70 miles a week, I can do 60 minutes at the gym going full bore, and I feel great. (Oh... I'm 75.)
That's where your husband will be in 6 months. Never mind what they tell you...that shit hurts. And he'll be tired. But he'll get better and better. Not day by day...but week by week he'll get his strength back. And maybe more strength than he's had in years. My little pig valve will outlive me.
Be worried... that's fair. But don't despair. He's joining the "zipper on the chest" fraternity. There's lots of us.
Lots of good wishes going out to him - and you.

And be encouraged. My pal who had aortic valve replacement three years ago at age 66 has summited Mt. Kilimanjaro last year and is right now climbing Mt. Meru (14,000 feet).
So many people do so well with cardio rehab after surgery and feel better after a few weeks.
Best wishes.

(12,172 posts)I have what I hope is helpful news, though. I had both my aortic and mitral valves replaced, as well as a piece of heart muscle ruined by Staph A. That was in the spring of 2010.
This past spring, my annual go-round with my cardiologist led him to utter this phrase "Like a teenager."
I'm 66.
If you can, start looking for an electric liftrecline chair. A GODSEND for someone who has just had their sternum split in two, and can't use their hands or elbows to got to their feet. Also good for napping, which will also be prevalent.
My sincerest best wishes to you and yours!

(7,760 posts)Recovery will be slow. If he has the valve replaced with an artificial valve he will in all likelihood need to be on blood thinner for the rest of his life. He will have to have monthly finger stick blood test. 20 mins tops. To check his INR.
Good luck!
