https://www.democraticunderground.com/100211496337Here his lawyers argue that Trump's tweets don't count as evidence because he doesn't know what he's talking about.
And here Fox News argues that Trump technically isn't lying because his memory simply changes with time.

MONTGOMERY: I don't know, man. I think that some of this is fluid for him. And I think, you know, his memory sort of changes with time, and that's one of the reasons his lawyers didn't want him sitting down with special counsel. But, in his defense -- and I really believe this -- he thought he wasn't going to win. ...
His own defenders are arguing that the President of the United States doesn't know what he's talking about and that he no longer has a functioning memory.
His defenders!
25th Amendment anyone?

(96,943 posts)That would be an easy out and Trump does not deserve an easy out.
What he deserves is prison.
Just once I'd like to see actual justice served to a criminal president.

(96,943 posts)the guilty walks free, nothing changes and we are, once again, left vulnerable to another wannabe tyrant.
And if it's not the healing claptrap, it's the there is always something more important than holding a criminal president accountable. As if justice and change can't both be had.
Which only results in the guilty walking free, nothing changing, and we are - once again - left vulnerable to another wannabe tyrant.

(13,247 posts)Granted, Trump has serious mental health issues. However, it is highly doubtful a dementia defense would ever make any headway in the courts.

(23,880 posts)If we allow the diagnosis of narcissism or pathological lying or psychopathy to be defenses against criminality in court, then most charges can be dropped.
If we did, I'm sure we'd still keep charges such as "trying to feed my family" or "running away from cop (while black)".

I think the GOP is working on a defense position, not for Trump himself, but for their party's complicity. Saint Ronnie was definitely demented, yet the Republicans worship him to this day. This demonstrates that mental capacity is not important to them. In fact, maybe they prefer incapacity. Easier to control the puppet.
After the mid-terms, they are desperate to maintain power and avoid indictment. I wouldn't be surprised if they threw Trump under the bus to accomplish this.

(13,877 posts)I'm not a shrink, but I can read and I can observe and I have direct experience...unfortunately.
Whatever is in their mind at the time is an absolute truth...regardless of what they said 10 minutes ago. They totally, 100% believe it in their shriveled psyches. You can show them a video or play a recording and it will make NO DIFFERENCE because it does not compose with their current reality. That is all they have. There is zero accountabiity. You will be personally attacked and shredded...then accused of being hysterical/lying/out to get them, etc. Think of it as stream of conscious thinking/believing reacting to every slight and having the physical capacity/money/influence/flunkies to carry it out.
Is it dementia? Sometimes. Is it sociopathy? Sometimes. It is whatever it is At. That. Moment. There is no cure...it is baked into the psyche usually by a traumatic childhood.
Just imagine if someone like that ran our .... oh yeah, one does.
