If I recall correctly, you decide the amount of the donation. If all you have is $5 I think that is fine and you get rid of the ads for a year.

Something like $5 per month. Pretty reasonable given that it helps meet the costs of running the site.

amount each month, they won't buy a star. That hurts both them and DU. But if everyone--or nearly everyone--who is not contributing at all because of being in tight financial circumstances realizes they can buy a star for a few bucks, maybe many of them would do so.

Websites don't for free. You pay one way or another. A small donation or pay by ads in your face.

It is pretty simple -- if you don't like the ads you have three choices:
1. Don't visit the site
2. Use some kind of ad blocker -- I use Adblock Plus
3. Pay some money -- you have a choice as to how much -- I find the site valuable enough to support, but if you don't like that there are still options 1 and 2 available to you.

Do you work for free? I certainly don't.

DemocraticUnderground.com provides a service. They don't do it for free. Give them a few bucks for their service or read the ads.

Stop complaining. Since you're here, you're obviously more of an adult.

I donated to the site, and I also have a good adblocker on my browser even though Mac is pretty good.

Lotsa people in my parents generation <mine included> dont understand that like casual internet users like us.

And they are the ones that get prayed on, spending 19.95 to check their computer and 20.00 to optimize this, and another 15.00 to secure that.

Like us, they see something that is annoying, like an ad, and will go down the rabbit hole spending money and giving their credit card number away to get rid of that annoyence. They don't know they are scammed until its too late.

As annoying as it is, I trained my parents to only allow me to make changes to their laptops and tablets with security programs and whatnot. I started that after dad told me 'Microsoft' called him because of a security breach and he needed extra security with is credit card number.

tl:dr. people are scamming older folk who arnt as comfortable with this technology.

The people who run this site deserve all that ad money.

I actually prefer the new ads over the previous "secretly change external link targets to some strange forwarder page that makes it impossible to see the full URL before clicking the link" ad technique on mobile. I can simply scroll over the new ads.

Sometimes I see ads for German christian fundamentalists and click them. Then fundamentalists have to pay ad money to DU.
