Boy, the Capitol Lying in State optics are extraordinary.

All those congressmen gathered around, wiping their eyes, the sunset, the long camera angles, the military band. It’s quite moving.

I suspect they’re identifying with a lot of this. Wondering how they’ll be remembered. Wondering what their legacies will be.

And we’re all wondering if this is mourning for a standing in the world, a sense of equality and being respected by even countries who oppose us.

for some of us, all that we feel is a sense of relief that they are no longer in the world.

Not all parents are good parents.

As far as I can tell, whatever else they were, the Bush's were loving parents, but based on results, not great at instilling values.

I feel for their kids and grandchildren who will miss them though.

But when people are in the 90s it is to be expected. They are lucky they had them as long as they did.

We all knew. She counted herself lucky, but missed her mom. She cried pretty hard nonetheless.

Everyone handles grief differently and no one should be judged for it.

He'll lie in state on a mess hall table at the Terre Haute Federal Pen while the guards try to figure out who threw him off the third-floor catwalk.

After two weeks they'll plant him in the prison cemetery because the other inmates are tired of him stinking up the place, and it's hard to balance your tray on his rotund corpse.

I think it's because it is so rare to have a public event anymore where people come together. Ritual is important. I felt that way about the McCain funeral too.

... is that we are all drawn to recognize human fallibility. We have to acknowledge the deceased failings, but it's put in a context where his/her strengths are also acknowledged. We'd be better off as a country if we could bring this wisdom into everyday life.

By "major" I mean one that CNN covers without talking.
