I don't see his name in a lot of potential 2020 lists. I know that he has yet to even take the office he just won, one of the most important governorships in America. And that alone is a reason not to run, being early in his first term as Gov. of California.
But what if he's exactly what we need? Is there support there? Is the bizarre triangle with him and Donald Trump, Jr. vis a vis Kimberly Guilfoyle too much?

(60,978 posts)In addition, if he waits, that weird triangle is less likely to be a problem -- though he will always have some baggage related to his personal behavior -- though that didn't stop Trump.

(10,721 posts)I like Garcetti but mayor to POTUS is a big leap.
I think Harris will be the front-runner after the March 3 primaries conclude.
But, Los Angeles is a city of 4 million people.
Sarah Palin was a VP nominee being governor of a state 700,000
Dick Cheney was VP twice from a state with less than 600,000
Joe Lieberman was a VP nominee from a state of 3.5 million people. (Back in the 90s, I knew a young woman from California who said that she liked Connecticut because it reminded her of Los Angeles - so, the whole state was like her one city)
Bill Clinton was a 2 term president from a state with about 3 million people.
I think Swalwell may give it a go as well, and while I like him on Twitter, I'm not sure the time is right for him yet. Who else? Schiff? Love the guy, but he may be up to his ears in investigations all through 2019.

(10,721 posts)And, yes, a mayor from LA or NY certainly has a better shot than a mayor from South Bend, IN (Buttigieg) or even New Orleans, LA (Landrieu). But it's still one hell of a leap.
I think it's too soon for Swalwell, but he's one. Steyer and Schiff are two others. I don't think Steyer will last long and I suspect Schiff will remain in the House. Swalwell may also determine he needs to stay put. In fact, I'm hoping the field of candidates ends up being much smaller than predicted. Maybe 10-12 instead of 20-30.
You never know what California celebrities might make a run, though I wouldn't take any of them (such as Oscar De La Hoya) seriously.

(10,721 posts)He'll still be young enough. But that's a long time from now and so much can change. I'd love to see 8 years of Harris, followed by 8 years of O'Rourke (at which point Newsom would be nearly 70), but that's asking a lot.

(15,686 posts)Governor Brown would be a natural to beat Trump. The man takes no prisoners. The maggot wouldn't stand a chance against him, imo. And he's highly qualified. Too bad he isn't 20 years younger.

(15,686 posts)The best the republicans could do was demand our budget surplus be given back to the rich people who had to pay such high taxes.
I really love him. I even love his grouchy old man attitude when he's right and someone's trying to cross him. Normally I can't stand that in a person. Bernie Sander's loud mouth makes me cringe. But Brown is different. He knows how and when to use it. He's got a great track record and could take the maggot out with it.
