One would presume somebody would have noticed something what with Trumpf claiming theres miles and miles of it.
Wouldnt there be a paper trail of building permits or environmental impact statements?
***Clarification - I mean specifically Trumps grand plans for a really big wall, not the existing stuff***

(32,003 posts)There are large areas of the SW that have barriers and fencing. It is purely semantic to say it is a "Wall" or is not a "Wall". What is your definition of a Wall?
Many areas do not need a barrier simply because the environment is too hostile for significant crossing.

(32,822 posts)Im aware of the existing structure. Ive seen it on Border Security.

(2,315 posts)We have seen many updates where razor wire has been added to the tops of fences and existing walls.
In my view, "The Wall" refers to his 20' high border-to-border dream. A variety of vendor samples were built in San Diego over a year ago. My understanding is that none of them have actually been built other than as samples.

(32,003 posts)For those who oppose any wall it is not much of an argument. In fact, the opposite.

(1,706 posts)all I'm saying is they predated dump
walls are a silly idea to stop illegal immigration
What is the purpose? People come in many ways mostly from over staying visas.

(46,095 posts)Trump will take superficial first steps with devastating and permanent damage.
Supposedly a butterfly sanctuary is going to be destroyed regardless of whether the Wall is completed at that location.

(7,397 posts)environmental groups. Either that or they did hear them and rejected them. This is a cruel, harmful, expensive and unnecessary enterprise to soothe one man's ego and placate the suckers who voted for him.
I always wondered why corporations can be considered people but entire species of animals cannot. Interesting concept to me at least. The environment should be seen as a part of our health and happiness as citizens and taxpayers. The flora and fauna are essential to how many of us define happiness in our lives.
But unfortunately butterflies do not make campaign contributions.

(182,797 posts)Which sort of looked like they were building something (big loud heavy equipment) and it was lied about in some RW press or in memes. Trump either actually believes it or doesn't know enough to keep his mouth shut. Probably both.

(11,736 posts)It seems like there are structures that exist in most places where a physical structure is feasible. Most places with out physical barriers are so remote or hard to navigate that building there would be irrelevant.
When President Obama was increasing border security he focused on technology (sensors, new equipment, etc...) and personnel. He also worked on repairing existing structures that were older.
Trump is talking out of his ass, which he always does. For him, the wall is a symbol, like the big gaudy gold T R U M P lettering on the buildings that he doesn't even actually own. Walls, unless they are encircling a smallish fortified structure, are worthless for keeping people out. Ask the Chinese how well their wall kept the Mongols out.

(32,822 posts)Despite being heavily guarded people got across it

(11,736 posts)I did not see the Berlin Wall, but from what I read and learned of its history, it was continuously being built up, expanded in its perimeter, guard towers added, surveillance, etc... because people just kept getting through it. And that wall was only meant to separate less than 100 miles of territory.

What's idiotic is the idea that we're going to engineer a more effective barrier than the Great Sonoran Desert.
