(8,738 posts)Its a grand jury, not a court room.
In a grand jury, the person goes in there and its the empaneled grand jury, the prosecutor and a court recorder and the person being interviewed, thats it.
No lawyers.
No judges.
No one else.
No exceptions.
They can step out to confer with their lawyers but the lawyer(s) are not allowed in the room.
The grand jury is allowed to ask any questions they want related to the case and as many questions as they want to ask, until they are satisfied they have all the answers they want.
And there is no way for the person being questioned to know what they already know, so lying is incredibly risky.

(279 posts)It was a hearing in an appellate court. Parties to the case don't appear before an appellate court, only the lawyers for both sides.

(3,363 posts)You don't clear out an entire courtroom floor to have 10 District Court judges all in attendance for a secret grand jury hearing unless you're dealing with a massive national security issue or a very very high profile case.
And 2 of Mueller's top lawyers were spotted returning to Mueller's office 10 minutes after the hearing ended. One was Michael Dreeben, the best criminal lawyer in the country. The other was Zainad Ahmad, a specialist in counter terrorism and middle east cases. She tried 9 or 10 terrorism cases and didn't lose a single one.
Speculation is that this either involves someone high up like Pence, or it involves a major counter terrorism case involving someone like Eric Prince.

(2,191 posts)Still, people have been speculating that today's case was related to Pence since it first started back in August. It's gone up and down very quickly, and the lone DC Circuit judge who recused himself from the en banc (full court) appeal was the only one who was appointed by Trump.
