Because we are a diverse nation, senator Kirsten Gillibrand is worried that the top three contenders for the Democratic nomination according to polls are white men.
When van Jones asked her whether she was nervous about it, she answered yes at the 20 second mark of this clip:

(24,399 posts)but I hope that our party hasn't become risk-averse and/or bought into the media narrative about "economically anxious" white votes because of the right-wing backlash against the election of Barack Obama and the nomination of Hillary Clinton.

(16,342 posts)Regardless, shes not in an enviable spot relative to others. I suspect even she would admit that.

"She should be reflecting on why that is."
Seems to be a bit of a revelation.

(53,984 posts)The problem is that race, as a category, is an inherently shallow topic.
Race as a historical problem that all Americans grapple with is a deep rich problem. It's something she could have explored and it would have offered a lot of insight to her thinking. Maybe the fact that she didn't explore & verbally perambulate the way Bill Clinton or Obama would have to offer fresh paradigms for our thinking tells us something about Gillebrand. I like her as a senator and she has the most anti-Trump voting record in the senate. So she's not unsubstantial. But she's not a paradigm shifter either.
I just think it's important to point out that she isn't just going around making this statement on her own - it was said in response to a question she was asked.

(50,248 posts)There should be no prebaked standard for our candidates. Coronations don't work. Someone will catch fire and whether they are male or female or black or white or old or young will not matter. Ousting Republicans is what matters.

(2,065 posts)In 2016 voters on the Left ultimately decided for a white woman. And in 2008 and 2012 we decided on an African-American man. We are indeed a diverse party. And the voters may change their mind by 2020. Big freakin deal! Get behind whoever the Democratic voters decide!

(86 posts)I watched the interview and Gillibrand clearly states that all of our potential nominees are by far better than Trump and will have her full support.
But when questioned by Van Jones about the current lack of enthusiasm for our current potential female candidates, she answered quite honestly that it was a concern.
Of course it's a concern. What do Biden, Bernie and Beto offer that Kamala, Elizabeth and even Kirsten do not? I know the answer, and millions of Democratic women do too.
