The problem is the way the media consistently ignores and back burners black women, ad evidenced by their treatment of Stacey Abrams.

But while she is blameless in this, this kind of thing does threaten to negatively impact AOC by building resentment against her, as the Twitter responses show. Fair or not, when people feel that someone is being pushed on them - especially at the expense of someone else - the human tendency is to resist that person. We saw the same thing with Bernie Sanders is 2016 and it's starting to happen with Beto now.

However, the media attempt to diminish Stacey Abram's had nothing to do with AOC. She just happened to be the subject of the photo chosen to illustrate a story about Stacey but a photo of anyone other than Stacey would have been just as problematic.

but so is the framing. If Abrams was the most googled politician then just mention her or list say the top 5 or so. Don't set up a false comparison.

Maybe they think AOC is better clickbait, which she probably is. But if Stacey got 1/100th of the free media they give to AOC, she'd have a much higher profile.

I wish she was afforded a fraction of the free media given to others. This is not to take anything away from Beto or AOC, so please don't take it as such. I wouldn't be truthful if I didn't say that Stacey's mistreatment (or dismissal, even?) is noticed and stings, personally.

9. Newsweek Turns Stacey Abrams' Most-Googled Crown Into an Article About Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Tue Dec 18, 2018, 11:19 AM
Dec 2018
Stacey Abrams captured the imaginations of millions by coming this close to winning the Georgia gubernatorial race, a feat which doubtless helped her to become the “Most Googled Politician of 2018.” But for some reason, Newsweek chose to make incoming Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) the star of their article on Abrams’ accomplishment.

The headline reads “STACEY ABRAMS, NOT ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ, WAS MOST GOOGLED POLITICIAN IN THE U.S. IN 2018,” and apart from a single mention in the setup for the article, Abrams is completely absent from it. Even the photo for the Stacey Abrams article is of AOC.

The balance of the piece is almost entirely devoted to Ocasio-Cortez, who defeated Democratic incumbent Joe Crowley to become the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. That’s quite an accomplishment, but an odd one to devote most of an article about the most-searched for politicians to, especially given the fact that AOC didn’t even come in second. Or third...

Andrea Stewart Cousins is the Senate majority leader, Crystal Peoples Stokes is Assembly majority leader.
And Tish James is Attorney General. And the Assembly speaker is an African American man, Carl Heastie. Looking forward to accomplishing great things in the coming year now that Democrats control the state senate.

... I believe this is an example of age-ism. They've chosen a pic of a young beautiful woman over an older woman who happens to be black. They would have done the same if Stacey Abrams were white (in this case.)

On the other hand it's not Alexandria's fault for the media bias. She certainly didn't create the bias but she's pretty good at exploiting it while she can. I like the tweet from RolandSMartin calling Newsweek out on this.

I like both women, however, Stacy Abrams is much more experienced and accomplished. Newsweek is pathetic in reinforcing the sexual stereotype that only a woman’s looks matter. Are they trying to top the National Enquirer?

They need to understand that their idea of beauty - fair skin, long, straight hair, thin - is not universal.

I think Stacey Abram's - with her dark skin, natural kinky hair, and ample frame - is absolutely beautiful. And I know I'm not alone.
