He did what I expected him to do but it is still a grave disappointment.
In 1979 I had an abortion in the 2nd trimester. I was married, and we wanted that child... but there were problems. Big ones. The closest place to have an abortion at 21 weeks was Louisville, Kentucky. We were living in Cincinnati and had a half decent income at the time. So we went to Louisville. The procedure was D & E.
I have fought a lot of years so that no woman has to travel to another city and put her life in the hands of doctors she doesn't know. Kasich has made it harder for women to get the basic medical care needed at a difficult time. He has failed to be a check on a legislature hell bent on imposing their personal religious views upon women. Now we will turn to the courts and the next crop of legislators. I am again in Ohio, and I will join the fight. The court will be looking in the face of an old woman who had to make a heart breaking decision 40 years ago and confirm if that struggle was worth it or if the USA no longer cares about women.
It is appalling that women are still having to fight this fight. Yes, women can still obtain 2nd trimester abortions with other procedures. They come with greater risk and greater expenses. Fewer centers are set up to perform them. They took back another inch.....
So we fight. To my last breath, I will fight.

(6,690 posts)Considering where the Republican party has gone, I guess he is a moderate. But he's still pretty far right in my opinion.
He runs on pro life and said up front he would sign the D&E bill but not the heartbeat bill. I don't respect that he feels it his duty to force his religious views upon anyone else by matter of law.

Kasich gutted Education t feed his friends charter schools. So many scandals the Republican Legislature put the money back in on his last budget.

(17,988 posts)Is not a moderate and we are in for worse with Mike DeWine. The little runt with 8 kids will love telling women what to do.
He will also sign a right to work law that Republicans want. They knew Kasich would not sign it after the thrashing we gav3 nom over trying to killl public unions.

(11,575 posts)The Republican agenda to deprive women of he right to control their own bodies and make their own medical decisions without political interference is the worst.

(12,400 posts)That may be the case for some. I believe most vote what they think their constituents want. After all, its a cushy job with prestige, sometimes a salary, sometimes even benefits. Better to be reelected than to make things better.

(5,500 posts)To add state constitutional amendments to protect reproductive rights. I think if put to a vote, these referendums would pass in many states. This would also protect against state legislators who want to encroach upon this right one small law at a time.
I'm sure many southern states may not be able to pass these referendums. But you never know what will happen if you put it to a vote.
And I would say these states who want to severely restrict reproductive rights do so at their own economic risk. Companies like Amazon who are looking for young talent, know that they won't attract people to move to such backwards places.

(3,075 posts)and Kasich has been horrible for women in Ohio. He does have a very good PR team, he is perceived as moderate and logical. Even tho he lost his cool on a police officer who pulled him over years ago (you can find that on youtube). I believe THAT is the real John Kasich, the moderate JK is just a polished turd.
Kudos and admiration to you, KentuckyWoman!

(1,020 posts)In '70 some friends and I chipped in so that another friend could get a greyhound to NYC for an abortion. Chicago to this day is a catholic town, and this was before Roe v. Wade and thus it was not legal nation-wide nor was it legal in Chicago.
Never again. On almost every Jan. 22nd "March for life" protest I'm on the Embarcadero with the Raging Grannies, Code Pink, and all the other freedom- and diversity-oriented peeps screaming at them.
One year at the March For Life there was some old codger who wore a long necklace made out of rosary beads, along with a long robe and sandals - the standard Jeebus-clone attire. This assUmes Jeebus was a caucasian from europe (cough). He's leading a group of kids so OF COURSE I've got my eye on the guy to make sure he's not Chester The Molester. He sees me and says to the kids, "Behold the sodomite!"
I hollah back at him, "yo! you're wearing a dress and I eat pussy. So who's the sodomite Now? Girl!"
The anti-choice peeps are just more xtians thinking that their beliefs should be enshrined into law. *They must be stopped!*

The end of his tenure as governor here cannot come soon enough for me.
