If you look at real estate photos from the period that the Obamas were negotiating to buy the house, you will see a very prominent wall on the back and part of the side of the house, but a street view from the front. My guess is any other additions were mandated by the Secret Service, they don't seem to screw around with the total security of whoever they are assigned to protect.
