decides to run
Howard Wolfson, Bloomberg's top political advisor, in an email hinted at how much his boss would look to invest into his own potential campaign for president.
Which means that he will get extremely favorable coverage from the media. Why? Where will he spend the bulk of that $100 million? On TV ads of course. Buying big blocks of ads == favorable coverage.

(22,031 posts)One, Michael Bloomberg is REALLY a successful businessman. He built profitable companies that continue today. He's also truly rich, unlike Trump.
Two, Mr. Bloomberg has 12 years of experience in government having been a decent mayor of New York City.
Another thought is that Trump said he would self-finance his campaign which just turned out to be another lie. Mr. Bloomberg wouldn't feel it financially if he spent his own money on his campaign.

(39,369 posts)Hard to see him getting to 1st base in our primary. I will say that his takedown of Trump at the DNC in 2016 was unsurpassed.

(19,972 posts)NBC had him labeled as a (D).
The discussion was mostly about climate change. He seems to understand the seriousness of it. Obviously not an idiot.
He said he would probably decide about running in January or February. When asked what he thought his chances would be among Democrats, he said he had won his mayoral race three(?) times in Democratic, minority-majority NYC.
That's all I remember.

You know, the kind who think that people have no right to be secure in their persons.
But of course, that's not you, right?

(31,261 posts)But I don't expect him to be the nominee. I think that he would be a good Secretary of State in a democratic administration, he has the gravitas to repair some of the worldwide damage that Trump has done.

(11,256 posts)If he wants to stop Trump, he should put aside his ego, save his money, and get on board.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)He has plenty of money to spend. I would much rather see him aggressively support the democratic nominee and then become SOS, I think he could fix lots of worldwide damage in that role. President is a little above his capability, IMO.

(31,261 posts)That's a lot of Benjamins. But if he tried to cash out completely, he would end up with less unless he sold his media empire to a big media company like NBC Universal. Family owned businesses are weird animals, typically their value is strongly tied to the patriarch or matriarch.

If the man who stated when he gets to heaven he does need to wait in line but passes right on in is not egotistical then no one is...

(63,221 posts)Are you kidding me? I lived in NYC during much of Bloomberg's term. He is very paternalistic and believes what he thinks is best for everyone should be the law. He has a huge ego, he's just not as obnoxious and as vulgar as Donald Trump.
Also, his political affiliation seems to blow with the wind. He's an opportunist. He would be much better than Trump, but he's not what we need for this country to heal. He will never understand the problem of income inequality in this country and that is one of our greatest challenges.

If you want to question Bloomberg's policies as a measure of fitness to run for President, you're welcome to. Since he left the Mayoralty, he's been a strong supporter of Democratic candidates.
