(15,326 posts)President Biden would be a lame duck from day 1. Im not sure how that would affect his ability to govern. Hopefully well take back the Senate by then, which would help considerably.
President Blanket E Blank wouldn't be?
Not understanding the logic here, Biden is, with the possible exception of Mrs Clinton, the most experienced candidate to potentially run.
The first democratic presidential election after Trump is going to be a study in brinksmanship and fixed obstinance, tempered with wisdom to dodge the inevitable knee jerks that will be triggered.
He's one of, if not the best shot we have.

(15,326 posts)Thats the only reason I called him a lame duck. I agree Biden is the best shot.

(11,536 posts)Long shot by but it may happen. There could be someone or somebodies that may want to preserve or fix, whatever the terminology, the Republican Party.
Gotta cover all the bases.

(8,790 posts)That he'll be removed is not.
People need constant reminding: The House impeaches, the Senate convicts. You need both to remove the POTUS.
Will the GOP controlled Senate vote to convict Trump? Probably not. Trump has re-aligned the GOP so that the Senate and House GOP committees are part of the POTUS. They can't get infrastructure and money unless Trump says so. He's got them by the balls, either they protect him from conviction or they starve in the next election.
Plus all the Republicans who refused to be Trump sycophants have already left. They all quit the party before the 2018 election. Everybody's who's left is a Trump suck up.
So the odds that the Senate will convict Trump are near zero.
History repeats itself. We've seen this before when Bill Clinton was impeached. The Senate refused to convict Clinton. Sure it was bullshit, but it was heat the Senate had to take to protect Clinton's Presidency. The GOP here will do the same for Trump. Not because the charges are bullshit, but because their survival depends on it.

(8,790 posts)They have no morals or ethics. They will only act against Trump when they see Trump as a liability.
I read somewhere that Trump has been merging the GOP Presidential Campaigns, Congressional Campaigns, and the RNC into one entity. Forcing existing Republican Senators and Congresspersons to bow to him to get money and support. If that holds, no Republican will defect from Trump, no matter what kind of beating the party takes at the polls.
Their only option is to quit. We've already seen a rash of Republicans quitting before the 2018 election. I think, with only a handful of exceptions, all Republicans in office now are fully wedded to Trump.
On edit: Here's a link to what I'm talking about. https://www.politico.com/story/2018/12/18/trump-machine-swallows-rnc-1067875

(2,713 posts)Reports are beginning to emerge that the mega wealthy donor classes who support the rethugs are getting more and more dissatisfied with him, especially after this shutdown stunt of his. If the markets keep being erratic and the tariff situation continues to wreak more havoc on the farmers in the Midwest and affect domestic production of manufactured items that require foreign steel and other imports, we may see a deepening of their loathing for him. They're all about the bottom line. If their earnings and profits are affected, which in turn lowers shareholder values, they'll abandon him and they'll give their servants in Washington their marching orders or shut off the donation spigots.

(8,790 posts)He's trying to tie up all the purse strings and logistics to him. So when the shit hits the fan with Mueller, enough Republicans stick with him because they have no other option.
Its remarkable to me that Trump feels the need to have this over the top leverage on his own people. They should be allies, but the heavy handed tactics show a deep insecurity on Trump's part.

(11,750 posts)Biden brings the experience and knowledge to get us back on track and repair the damage; O'Rourke or Harris bring the inspiration and excitement. A winning ticket!

(2,949 posts)I think Biden is a great person, however Biden is old school, more of the same. Time for change. I really don't have a specific choice at this time. Hillary and Bernie are not on my list either.

(512 posts)I like Biden as well and it was great seeing a president and vice president get along so well and be great leaders, work well with one another as well as being good friends. drumpf and pence show absolutely no camaraderie. Pence gives no leadership at all with drumpf.. A thump on a stump..
Biden and Hillary do have great experience but again just too old ...as is Bernie...Elizabeth Warren just put the word out but she is best where she is at...I really don't think she could win but what do I know..

(3,432 posts)Take a relatively young talented politician and park him on the bench in a useless job. Having witnessed about fifteen Presidential elections I can honestly say I believe the Vice President candidate makes no difference. People vote for the top, Nixon got a landslide with Agnew. McCain almost made it with Palin. Roosevelt got a landslide with a drunk in '32. I'll bet not one in a hundred knows who Trumans VP was.

(85,890 posts)Sometimes it DOES make a difference. A BIG difference. Consider Biden at the top of the ticket. Hes quite elderly. In that case, a young and exciting new face (Beto? Harris?) would be a strong attraction. A very strong running mate with a much older figure at the top of the ticket would erase all fears of who could take over in case the president died while in office.

(7,309 posts)I would prefer someone younger but will support the Democrat and work to elect her or him. I hope whomever is our candidate gets under Trump's skin, makes him say things that others will finally find unacceptable.

(5,957 posts)In fact, such a debate is important.
The problem is the people who wont let it go after the primary has a winner. Some of these people pledged to vote third party or not vote at all, which is tantamount to a toddler stamping its feet yelling, NO!
Sometimes, you cant get what you want. In 2016, compared to Trump, both Hillary and Bernie were excellent candidates that should have been a no-brainer to vote for.
I didnt / dont exactly like Hillary, but I would never vote for someone else vs. a Republican. Thats completely insane and short-sighted.
So, in 2020, please go wild during the primaries, but stop trying to sabotage your own damn party over stuff like identity politics and economic policies. Yes, we all want those things badly, but, if you lose, and you would rather vote for a Republican or Third Party to prove a point than support the winner, then frankly, youre being an idiot.

I hope that we have a good primary and polity agree to disagree and vote for the nominee when its all over.

(3,259 posts)We have zero reason to put someone in who feels they need to make a one term claim. His primary chances end right there.
