I often meet Trump supporters. I married into a Republican family. Not that they are all Trumpers, but those who are, including friends of the family, think he is the best thing since sliced bread and all other views are fake news.
Conversations about Trump seem to be short, or short-tempered, because they have no facts, other than claiming he is making America great, Obama was terrible, and he is probably going to go down in history as the best president ever. I have learnt that they will not engage in a fact-based discussion, but I do sometimes get a chance to say what I think is wrong with the Trump presidency before things break down into insults and shouting.
If you were in this situation and you have a thirty second window to make your point, what would you say? What is the most powerful argument you can make against Trump in thirty seconds? I am not asking if I should bother or not, but I am asking for your advice in giving the strongest critique of Trump in no more than thirty seconds.

(52,116 posts)Banks wouldn't lend him money anymore to watch him live lavishly and let the business fail.
So he switched to a fee-based business model, just licensing his name to others.
Probably the most sensible business decision he's ever made, but one he was largely forced into because banks and investors recognized him as a horrible businessman.

(155 posts)First, ask to be heard out. It's a reasonable request and if someone won't listen to you, then they have just admitted they aren't interested in hearing facts that may shatter their little world of make believe. But if they agree to listen:
1. Every business person who ever had the misfortune to cross paths with the Trump Corp will tell you that Trump micromanaged every tiny detail of the business. Micromanaging is always a sign of poor business skills.
2. 3 of the 4 bankruptcies involved personal guarantees by Trump to the banks - no big corporation ever signs this kind of document precisely because it clearly links the individual to the business outcome. He was personally and inextricably linked to these business failures by his own declarations and to deny it now is ridiculous.
3. Both points 1 and 2 have been reported on numerous times over the years, well documented and his countersuits against these reports have failed 100% of the time. Anyone who doesn't that the time to read about or listen to these fact based accounts is wilfully ignoring mountains of evidence.
4. Finally, even if someone chooses to ignore all the evidence of Trump's failures as a businessman, think about this:
If you went into a bar and the guy on the stool next to you
- mocked a disabled person.
- next bragged, BRAGGED, about grabbing and assaulting women.
- and then continuously insulted and belittled the men and women serving in the armed forces..
YOU WOULD HATE THAT GUY.
Trump may be authentic, but he is an authentic prick. Why anyone want to support this jerk is beyond me.

One I knew we would talk all the time, makes jokes - really it was a model of how deplorables and liberals can in fact get along. Well *ahem ahem* recently he said he doesn't feel like talking about it anymore. I just turned away and said OH YESSSSSS I DO UNDERSTAND - then turned around and chuckled my head off.
A customer called last week and wished me happy new year and I said oh yes you too this is gonna be one for the record books with all the coming indictments...and she said yes they'll be finally getting Hillary. I said welllllllllll Ms. Smith you may be disappointed with that considering rump's people are the ones getting indicted. It's like a lightbulb went off in her wooden little head.

Take the previous five Presidents: Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama. This covers the last 4 decades.
Now, name one that you would not choose over Trump to be Commander in Chief on 9-11.
They will think a bit but realize that they cannot make any plausible case for Trump instead of Clinton or Obama. If they try to reach back to Carter, remind them that he was an officer in the nuclear Navy and fully prepared to launch nuclear annihilation against our enemies if necessary.
Same exercise with JFK or Trump during the Cuban Missile Crisis will yield the same result.

(14,286 posts)That was his most obvious low point. It polled terribly.
Trump took Putins word over American intelligence agencies, who all said Russia interfered in our election. Putin even admitted he helped Trump get elected, while they were both standing there. Trump refused to press Putin not to attack us again. He displayed cowardice. Then the next day, when he saw that people were disgusted, he lied about his statement and pretended that he forgot to say not!
He always praises fascist dictators, calling them strong. He disses our allies, calling them weak. Donald Trump is an enemy of freedom.
If that doesnt work, remind them that Trump passed code-level intelligence secrets to two Russian operatives in the Oval Office when he thought no one was looking, endangering embedded allies.
If none of that works, remind them he promised that Mexico would pay for the wall, now he wants you and me to pay for it.

the challenge you face in trying to trash trump to maga in 30 seconds is akin to trying to trash Jesus or any other religious figure to a confirmed believer in said religion. Consider how you would respond if someone was trying to trash your religious belief ( including atheist or agnostic ) Facts do not apply, logic does not apply, the scientific method does not apply; it's all worthless in an argument based on emotion and faith. Consider instead the message-MAGA Make America Great Again. Ask them to explain when and how America Stopped being great when 1. the declaration of independence has not been altered recently 2. The constitution has not been amended recently 3. The unalienable rights of Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness still apply 4. The Bill of Rights has not been amended, voided, or altered. 5. We still have the legal guarantees of ALL citizens receiving equal protection under the 14th amendment. If you get a glassy eyed blank stare score yourself 5 bonus point. If you get the usual rambling bullshit answer then interrupt, and ask how THEY define a country's greatness. When the bullshit continues, which it will, interrupt and ask where they learned this, and have they ever even heard of American Exceptionalism. When they reply no they they haven't- inform them when they understand more of this then and only then will you discuss American Greatness again.
