If you think a freshman congresswoman who actually connects with people and actually understands new technology is the problem with America, it may be that you are the problem with America.

Why shouldn't she be getting attention? Why do you argue the only reason people care about her is because of false division?

Why bother reading it? If the political junkies stopped going to that site, ad revenue would dry up. I would suggest a rolling boycott of that place.

(51,095 posts)It's a kind of supremacy ploy (Cristobal Alex ploy) that we would find objectionable coming out of a white guy's mouth. "You just can't rein in white guys. They rein you in."
A O-C will be reined in. If she is as smart as she appears to be so far, she will rein herself in and marshal her forces more effectively than trying to be loudly radical about everything everywhere every time with everybody. She is creating the impression that she just wants to be noticed, which is a bad impression to create while she backs some good ideas that could use support. Not good strategy. But it did work for the Moscow Agent Governing America, so who knows but I do know that as a group statistically Democrats and progressives work well with substance and facts, better than the opposition.

(71,033 posts)Go after Republicans not Democrats in Democratic districts...waste of time and money. And I am not from the 60's but was watching a CNN show about the 60's the other day...and those non-conformist pretty much all looked alike.

Demsrule86
(71,033 posts)What you describe is conforming and of course those who didn't meet the standards were no doubt marginalized...sometimes I envision a world where you can just be who you want but it never seems to happen. Social norms were enforced just as viciously no doubt by the counter culture as within the 'square' culture. But I was not present and not part of it.
wasupaloopa
(4,516 posts)Just drop the word nonconformist and discuss what they were about. It wasn't about nonconformity. It was doing something, it was action, it was building a movement. It was change. It was about turning the norms on their head. It was about bringing in a new and better word. It was listening to your inner self. It was doing what you thought you should do without caring what others taught you.
It was about a new freedom and a desire to be and share with others who felt and thought the same way, thus the identity in dress and music and thought.
It wasn't about not being something, it was about being something new.
Demsrule86

(71,033 posts)about her...she is a newbie...let her be for a while...she needs some (years) experience before she can assume a leadership position. I think she shows promise. But let it go. I was going to trash her name but kind of enjoy hearing from her. The dance thing was awesome. I honestly think (not you) some of her supporters will cause her trouble if they continue to attempt to shove this talented young lady down people's throats...as time goes by, most will like her just fine.
EffieBlack
(14,249 posts)As I've said, I hope she's savvy and focused enough not to get herself caught up in the increasingly breathless hype created by some of her more adoring fans, many of whom behave more like a cult than a constituency.

I just can't stand the posts that gush -not the news stuff...positively nauseating...not saying any of your posts are like this or pointing fingers at anyone... they have right to post what they choose...I do think it could hurt AOC if we are not careful and that would be a shame.

(51,095 posts)I can guess at who the "freshMAN congressWOMAN" might be (disregarding the discombobulated choice of words), but I really can't be sure or say.
Without a link or context, I don't know what was said or written. I don't know if his premise has been miss-stated in the OP or not.
In any case, connecting with people is most certainly not considered a problem by anyone. Go ahead and flabbergast me if you can.

(13,631 posts)But I don't care if she connects with people, I don't care if she's popular, I don't care if she's entertaining, I don't care if she is technologically savvy. A lot of people fit that criteria good and bad. All I want to know is if she can do her job, and that waits to be seen. I have no way of knowing at this point.
