Today I observe, but not celebrate a special anniversary.

As of today, January 14, 2019, I have been sober for 29 years.

If you're actively abusing substances, the most important day of your recovery is today. The only difference between you and I is that I have a whole bunch of one day at a times under my belt. If I go out and get drunk tomorrow, than I'm back to zero.

If you're afraid of entering into recovery though, please believe that you CAN get here from there.

I had one of my closest friends commit “accidental suicide” when he drugged and drank himself to death at 45.
My other best friend should have died but he is now 4 years sober. I’m flying out to see him next week.

My brother is in a similar situation. He must be more than 40 years now. It's amazing where he started and where he ended up. He's made a huge success of his life and, as far as I know, has never wavered in his determination to stay sober. It really is "one day at a time," but then you look up and realize it's been a month, a year, a decade, a life. You're right . . . you CAN get here from there.

26. I wish my Mom had been succcesful in her fight with alcohol.

Not sure how, but I am able to socially drink without doing what she did to her body. She died at 41. Good for you, you are truly blessed to have gone that long sober. Addiction is horrible, it impacts everyone around you.

That is hella-impressive. Something like 1/30 people don’t have a relapse, most do relapse.

I’ve made it about 6 months, but usually I get messed up around summer. Lots of bad stuff happened to me in summer and everything puts me back into that time.

Your example gives me something to aspire for!
