(38,717 posts)and who has had more than 100 (I stopped counting at 100) blood draws from my hand.
I did have a blockage at the thoracic outlet on the left side, but my veins were just find in the left side below the thoracic outlet, the veins in my right side was perfectly normal throughout.
But - blockage => no tourinequet on the left; blockage => heparin IV in the right forearm or higher; heparin IV => multiple pokes a day (or did at the time) below the heparin IV to check PT/INR. For an entire month of hospitalization. (They have better solutions now)
So - just sayin' that I know from personal experience that blood draws in the hand does not inherently mean veins are shot.

(13,849 posts)I have small veins, and they roll.
I always waive them off trying the vein inside the elbow because I know they won't get it there and I'll have a hematoma.
Yesterday the phlebotomist had to stick me twice to get the visible vein in the back of the hand, even.
dixiegrrrrl
(60,167 posts)Had a medical problem, lots of blood draws over a short time, my inner elbow veins disappeared, probably in fear of the needle...
they can't use the other arm, for medical reasons, so now I have a chest port.
Now, with age, I notice the veins in the inside of my wrist look like a river delta, branching out all over the place, but the skin is too thin for blood draw, found out the hard way.
So maybe his hand is a good draw/insert place for him. Really can't see any other reason to have a bandaid there. But never have seen fresh blood thru a bandaid after needle stick, either.

(21,801 posts)Some people have deep veins in the arm that make it difficult to take blood. Whenever ANYONE tries to take blood from my arm/elbow, I'm always left with a huge bruise after they dig for several minutes. Now, I just tell them to take it from my thumb/wrist. Much easier, less painful, no bruising. Some think it's more painful there, but it seems to be an individual thing.

Plus, that's not a good spot for an IV anyway and it wouldn't be bleeding like that if it was.

(890 posts)Aging skin tears very easily. I am now having that problem myself. I bumped into a wall one time with my hand up in front of me and got a 3-cornered tear on the back of my hand that was 2 inches long. Sucks!

(179,174 posts)My father's hands were burned during World War II because someone (not my father) did something stupid. AS he aged, the skin on his hands got bad. He'd get terrible bruises and occasionally tears in the skin that would open and bleed. But they covered most of his (large) hands and showed extensive discoloring until it healed.
It looked nothing like Spanky's owie.
Dave Starsky
(5,914 posts)You know, the relatively larger parts of your upper extremities that tend to shear across things.
And aren't those skin tears usually dressed with something like Tegaderm? You know, a larger (transparent) dressing that also gives support to the surrounding skin. Not a Band-Aid.
Trump has a Band-Aid on the back of his hand.
Experienced nurse that you are, when you had a two-inch long skin tear on the back of your hand, did you put a Band-Aid on it?
mantis49
(890 posts)You can easily create another tear trying to remove it. But you know, he has the best doctors and others on his team!
I used a Telfa nonstick dressing on it, no Tegaderm at home.

(5,914 posts)A place where you can't feel the damage (because of neuropathy,) see it (because of where it is), or heal it (because you have diabetes).
It definitely seems to me that he is getting an IV for something, and it was hastily removed before the photo op.
