Not only does the suggestion he submit the SOTU in writing or read it from the Oval Office underscore the Trump shutdown, it would deprive the First Toddler of the pomp and circumstance he so loves.
He wouldn't get his little ego stroked by the joint session of Congress and all the focus on him, him, him he loves.

(3,592 posts)to give the SOTU. I think she just double-dog dared him to hold out until after the original SOTU date if he wants to claim he "won" the shutdown war. Either way, she just took the upper hand.

(7,113 posts)At the same time, Nancy saved us from hearing Trump crow (lie) about how his ratings were the highest of any president since Lincoln.

(58,785 posts)hope to gain by this, but reportedly Trump's SOTU will be all about blaming Democrats for everything, so averting sitting through that with national cameras on is likely part of the reason for this step.
No doubt this tactic is woven into bigger strategy, though, with smart goals we need to achieve. I feel sure none of them is to throw a dangerously volatile and unstable president into a narcissistic rage. He likes to hurt people, you know, and we have a lot of people he can hurt. He's probably already decided most of the furloughed workers are Democats...

Pelosi's decision is prudent from a security point, morally just from the point of refraining from asking DHS or other Federal workers from working even more without pay, and politically brilliant. Plus, it reasserts the role of Congress as a co-equal branch of government. The SOTU focuses on the President, but it's a report TO Congress, and Drumpfh has screwed the pooch.

(37,648 posts)But kudos to Pelosi! The SOTU would have just been one huge ad for "ME...TRUMP...SHUTDOWN GOOD...PUTIN GOOD...BAD NATO...WITCH HUNT...DID I MENTION WITCH HUNT...AND LET'S NOT FORGET THAT THERE'S A SHAMEFUL WITCH HUNT GOING ON."

(128,905 posts)although this whole thing is a shot across the bow and I expect all kinds of guest arrangements had already been made based on having it in the House chamber.
We are sortof in unprecedented territory given the modern "television" era. I don't think you can (safely) fit 535 elected officials in the Senate chamber, let alone all the department heads and whoever shows up from the Supreme Court, let alone the spouses and "guests" who might be honored in the speech, etc.
The next week or two is gonna get dicey!
