(14,489 posts)I think even most Republicans do care about our military and airport security/operations personnel getting paid.
Let's hope this type news repeatedly gets out into the MSM, and millions of phone calls made to Congress.
Our motto here (and has been for many years): DITCH MITCH!

(26,273 posts)#1 Is because they liked to pretend that they are strong on national defense largely to court the military vote but thats toilet bowled now because they are now openly pro Russia.
#2 Is because they like to funnel as much as the tax payers money as they can to corporations via "military appropriations".

(25,111 posts)Senate Republicans voted to ease a Russian oligarch's sanction, but McTurtle refuse to bring a vote on issues of reopening the government and from I'm reading, GOPers are not even challenging him.

(3,949 posts)He and his wife (USCG veteran) are having a three-day garage sale to raise money. It costs him about $100 a week in gas and tolls to get to work; they have two very young children and zero income. I hope some of his fellow Coasties will wake the F up now.

(28,117 posts)"Subject: USCG Member Assistance
Due to the government shutdown, members of the United States Coast Guard are in need of assistance. They are not receiving paychecks but are still required to come to work. The USCG has done what it can to minimize their work schedules to help them find opportunities to work outside of the organization. One of their challenges is that whenever the government reopens, they'll have to immediately go back to a normal work schedule.
It is likely that they'll receive a government assurance of back pay for the missed pay periods while the government is shut down. Though that is of some comfort, a promise of back pay won't help them buy groceries or pay for living expenses in the meantime.
There are hundreds of USCG members working in Yorktown and living in and around our community.
I recently retired from the USCG and made a call to one of the Chief's that worked with me on base to see how things were going with the members. He informed me there are members in need, stress is high, and they are looking for options.
I would like request that people in our community in need of work done consider employing these men and women. Personally I'm going to employ a few members to help get rid of my leaves and cut firewood. $25 per hour is a fair rate for the type of work in question. If you'd like to pay more you're welcome to.
I'm going to develop a spreadsheet so that the USCG members can know what the work is, how long it'll take, and who to make contact with to coordinate.
If you have work that you'd like done to support these men and women, please email me or xxxxxxxx.com, your name, address, phone number, the type of work and how many hours you think it'll take.
I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for considering helping these most worthy members of our community.
Very Respectfully,
Xxx Xxxxx, Sr. Chief, USCG, Retired"
We intend to hire some lawn work and pay a bit more.
This damn shutdown has to stop.

(8,200 posts)I lot of young folks who chose to join the military are totally oblivious to politics. This has been compounded by the lack of civics classes in school. They are like washed blackboards and without any opposing views they can be easily recruited to be die hard Republicans. This is one reason why I am oppose to the all volunteer army since they are not exposed to different views. When I was in the service we had some rather stimulating discussions on politics because we had a number or young people with college educations.

(5,995 posts)This is part of the reason some Dems were calling for the reform of DHS/ICE. DHS wrapped it's arms around many functions that used to be in separate departments after 9-11 that was meant to streamline coordination. If you look at the fiasco on the border with the kids, it is clear that there is still several agencies involved, i.e. HHS & DOD, so DHS really needs to be reviewed.

(14,489 posts)These young people are highly vulnerable and easy targets for propaganda. Spreading political dogma in any military service should be illegal and rules against it should be enshrined in their codes of conduct. Give these kids time to form their own rational minds.
Why we're allowing Limbaugh and Hannity on our military radio services I'll never understand.

(63,221 posts)Trump and Mitch are sociopaths. They don't care who they hurt and they have no concept of the real suffering that so many of these people are going through. It probably never even enters their sick, twisted little minds.

(14,489 posts)and that world loves psychopaths. Republicans have built mechanisms to protect themselves from the realities of everyday working people's lives, and one demonstration of that is the way they hold so-called "town halls" where attendance is very limited and virtually by invitation only. They always seem to have staff and schedulers to shield them from us commoners.
And as you know, their media presence is usually right-wing media only (where they hide) and rarely are exposed to moderate or left-leaning media (where they just send surrogate actors to take the beating).
Therefore, I think it's up to us to break up that isolationism, poke holes in that bubble and make them come face-to-face with our world. Democrats that come up with innovative ways to do that will be our heroes.
Speaker Pelosi and her crew are doing a great job of breaking the ice.......
