121. That was the George HW Bush pardons
Fri Jan 18, 2019, 06:15 PM
Jan 2019

Dead of night, Christmas Eve 1992, after Bush had lost re-election to Bill Clinton. Just a couple of weeks before Independent Counsel Lawrence Walsh was going to try Reagan administration officials for selling arms to Iran and using the proceeds to fund terrorists in Central America.

In addition to Caspar Weinberger, Bush pardoned Robert C. McFarlane, Elliott Abrams, and three former CIA officials, Clair E. George, Alan D. Fiers Jr. and Duane R. "Dewey" Clarridge. McFarlane, Abrams and Fiers had all already pled guilty to various charges, and the trial of Weinberger and others was going to put the lie to Bush's claim that he was "out of the loop" on the Iran/contra crimes.

These pardons were also the time when the notion of criminalizing policy differences entered our political lexicon, thanks to Bush. That formulation has been used as a shield and a cudgel to defend Republican criminality ever since.

for which investigators find sufficient reason to indict him, and due process must be followed. I will not call for anyone to be punished without fair and legal process and trial, even though I despise tRump as much as anyone here.

That said, I only wish there were laws that prescribed appropriate punishment for any public official that lies to his/her constituents where that lying causes substantial physical, mental or financial harm. We would have to build many new jails.

Then, I would like to see him forced to make whole all those small businesses he stiffed along the way, from the piano deliverer to the people who built his fancy digs and then got stiffed for a third or more of the agreed-to price. Let them go to regular prisons and be placed among common people.

We'd see the Dumpster become pale and bald.
We'd see Ivanka with tattered nails and lice in her hair.
We know that Jared, Eric and Don Jr will be deathly afraid to drop the soap.

Let them own their shame, live long, and die in prison.
Let their wealth be distributed to the needy.

That would make me very happy.

Donald Trump MUST be prosecuted. He simply MUST. Nixon wasn't. That led to Reagan being willing to violate the Constitution, as he did with Iran/Contra. Clinton is sort of a special case but when he lied under oath, he SHOULD have been prosecuted. Sorry. Clinton was supposed to be smart. He COULD have avoided that mess.
IF Trump is not prosecuted, the next time will be worse and we are getting closer and closer to the end of this democratic republic.

We don't have that in this country, but we should still strive for it. Trump has committed scores of crimes. Ideally, he should be charged and prosecuted as if he were poor and black, which probably means spending the rest of his life in prison. It is corrosive to the social fabric to allow someone to engage in criminal conduct in plain sight and go unpunished.

That being said, I emphatically endorse investigating and prosecuting Donald Trump either for allowing the Russian Federation to influence our elections and Individual One for being an agent of an unfriendly foreign power. Such behavior by American politicians not only shouldn’t be tolerated, but the parties involved should be prosecuted so such behavior should be deterred in the future.

The history of American Presidents who were found to not come up to expectations, is that they were neutralised, taken out of office, but then left alone.

The best we can hope for with Trump, is that he ends up in some gated retirement village for the Terminally Confused, where he can spend his days talking to like minded Old White Men who reminisce about their past glories, and wonder why things turned out the way they did.
He may even get the occasional visit from some close relatives, at least those who bother to remember who he is.

Jail is fine, but some future president would just pardon him and let him move back to one of his properties, assuming Russia doesnt foreclose in the mean time.

My preferred result would be for him to give up his US citizenship and move to Russia where he belongs. I strongly feel this would be far more likely to end in something close to what he personally deserves than anything the US justice system can or would actually accomplish.
