Could the High School Kids from KY change History?
Often times society and history is changed by the most unlikely, random actions. Kind of like the "Sir, Have you no shame" comment during the Red Scare period when McCarthy was finally called to task.
This whole episode of the hateful kids seems to be catching fire. I say this because I just got off the phone with my 80 something year old mother who voted for Trump. She was horrified by the whole episode. And she was so confused, because how could 'good christian boys do such a thing". I do not argue with nor disrespect my mother as she is over 80 and was and remains a great mother. It is just not done in my household. So all I said when she made here comment was "Mother, the answer is the hat they were wearing". Her response was simple. She said "I'm afraid you might be right". Unless you have a Southern mother over 80 you do not understand who much is implied in that simple statement. We have now seen our "kid's brains on Trump". And it was, and is ugly.

1. Probably not. This country is built on institutional racism in general, and the Catholic Church
isn't great about being accountable for its crimes specifically, so IMO people will chalk this up to "Trumpism," and figure it's all over when he's out of office.

6. I agree with you. This will do nothing to solve such longstanding issues.
But for the first time my mother saw actions she found horrifying and associated it with Trump.
While I long to resolve so many issues, getting rid of trump is the first step. And my mother and my family are not catholic. I doubt she knows all that much about the whole catholic child abuse issue. She is over 80 and while active in volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and feeds the homeless 2 days a week is caught in the FOX bubble not because she watches it, but because she listens to all her friends. And her preacher. |

It''s just assumed to be common knowledge from now on.
Here's a link to a news article for reference: https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-native-american-mocked-by-kentucky-high-school-students-in-dc-is-military-veteran-nathan-phillips It's frustrating trying to figure out WTF some people are talking about without some frame of reference. |

4. Yes. It is easy to blame the older white middleclass. But these kids that can afford to be sent to
private schools and still spew this hatred are evidence of a deeper problem. We need to get rid of Trump, but anyone that thinks these problems will disappear once he is gone are mistaken. Many people in my Appalachian community are still debating the Civil War.
We have a long way to go. |

18. Not so sure the IHS is shut down.
I live in (actually near) a town of <600 and the doctor at the IHS clinic is my prime physician. I had an appointment and labs done on 1/15 and was there again 1/18 to get med records sent to an oral surgeon. Maybe no money is going to fund the IHS from the Feds at present? I am at the clinic nearly every week, sometimes multiple times (am a geezer with multiple med problems and underwent 6 months of chemo and other treatments for lymphoma in 2018 and have ongoing treatment). There is no evidence at the IHS or at the Tribe they are being impacted at all by the Fed shutdown as far as day to day actions. The IHS employees at the clinic are employees of the Tribe and not Fed employees. The IHS and other jobs with the Tribe (housing, natural resources, casino, elder care, etc.) are not impacted because the employees are employed by Tribe not Feds (although much funding does come from Feds). But there are Fed employees in BIA and that administer the IHS and other programs which no doubt are impacted. The Fed source of funds one would assume will go dry without a budget and with a federal shut down.

24. Are you a GS Fed employee or a Tribe employee that works in a IHS Clinic?
My recent experience (this past week) may be different because the staff are Tribe (not GS IHS employees) and how each Tribe handles its clinics may be at their option as long as there are funds (unspent as yet) from IHS or other Tribe sources). In the past several days I spoke to three different men who work intermittently in the Tribe Natural Resource Department that started work this past week. The largest local employer by far is the Tribe and as yet the employment and services have continued.
Note that I differentiated between Fed employees and also noted that Fed funds would be gone at some point because of the Fed shut down. Just made a mention that as of yet in my particular instance the Tribe is keeping things going. I am in no way supporting the shut down or Trump or Trump and NA. I have zero idea of what is happening higher in the Tribe bureaucracy but so far they have managed well because Tribe employees are working and being paid. |

25. I am contracted, sub contracted actually
Specialty health care provider.
I think it depends on the agency and their resources whether they are running or not Other providers I am aware are working without reimbursement. I am going to contact my clinic again to volunteer without pay |

30. Good for you GusBob.
The IHS is good thing and an example of what we all could have with socialized medical care.
Probably some Tribes have more financial resources than others to weather this Trump clusterf*** of a government shutdown. The Trumpsters and GOP like to "break" nice things that help people. |

It's having an impact and anyone with any kind of compassion are appalled at this and are instantly understanding Trump's face is all over this. I can't tell you how many responses I have seen of people saying "I voted for Trump but I find this appalling".
