(21,863 posts)It's like going into a restaurant.
You see something on the menu and ask your server "what's in this?"
They tell you what's in it, and there is ONE ingredient that you CAN'T stomach, or maybe you're allergic to it.
So you ask the server if the chef can make the dish without that one ingredient, and the server responds "NO."
So you have the choice of ordering the dish and either simply not liking it, or perhaps having an allergic or life-threatening reaction like a peanut allergy, OR...you just don't order the dish.
And every dish Trump has served up has the $5.7 billion in it, and Democrats have done due diligence on the cost-effectiveness and usefulness of this particular "solution," and they KNOW it was a fake campaign promise made by Trump to woo the MAGAts. and in order for Democrats to do the jobs they were elected to do, they MUST say NO to anything that is a WASTE OF TAXPAYERS' money, and resources that could be better used elsewhere. And they HAVE voted for large sums of money...just not to be allocated to a "wall" or "fence" or "barrier."
It's all in the way that this mess is being framed. Trump's not budging on the $5.7 billion, and in his speech yesterday, HE REFERRED TO IT AS A "DOWN PAYMENT!" The "wall" or "fence" does NOT "cost" $5.7 billion. So he offers to temporarily restore programs HE KILLED with "executive orders" in exchange for the $5.7 billion, and that is NOT "compromise."
AND, the Democrats are smart enough to know, and have already said, that if they sign off on the $5.7 billion, he'll shut down the government again (or do something worse) when the next "down payment" is due.
So, the Democrats told their waiter / waitress "no thanks."
Sounds like the smartest move to make, given the circumstances.

(3,503 posts)I think she's trying to get some crossover support for her presidental run. I think she won't last long in the race and probably knows it, but is hoping to get some press to build up her status for the future. It's way too early to get excited. It's a long road to the white house and requires tons of organization and lots of money to run an effective campaign. We won't know much until late in the year when we find out which candidates have built an effective ground game. Obama is the standard. He was the only candidate I have seen since Humphrey who had organizers on the ground even at the precinct level. You can do all the press you want, but its the party faithful you need in the primaries.I do know she will have zero support in my precinct and probably close to zero in the Congressional District. Voters usually don't go for those who have lately "seen the light".

(1,809 posts)The facts are so basic on this mess; who's to blame, who is the grown up in the room.
There is no both sides when Trump is involved, there's only one Trump.

(317,068 posts)It is unfortunate that Congresswoman Gabbard based her misguided opinion on the far-right wing manipulation of these straightforward questions, Hirono spokesman Will Dempster said in a statement.
He added that over the past two years, Hirono has been attacked by right wing ideologues for her examination of Donald Trumps ideologically-driven nominees to the courts.
Senator Hirono asks all judicial nominees particularly those who have expressed very strong personal ideological views in conflict with Supreme Court precedent if they can be fair, Dempster said. She asked Mr. Buescher, who has a clear record of anti-choice activism, whether he could separate his personal beliefs from decisions he would make if confirmed for a lifetime appointment on the federal bench.

(12,404 posts)This is not a bothsiderism issue because you have one side dealing from a Bad Faith position. Negotiations are not made on TV or through a twitter account where a one-sided position is stated, sealed as the deal without debate or discussion or compromise.
That's not how it's done. That's not how any of this is done.
The press is now questioning why the Democratic leadership is unwilling to 'make a deal' when the offer Trumpski threw out was a non deal/deal, a temporary protective stance on DACA for a permanent, ineffective, never-ending wall with an astronomical price tag. This is just more bullshit being thrown out, wrapped in yesterday's newsprint, declared new when it's absolutely not.
The Democratic House has already attempted to reopen the government and stop the madness. Gabbard should question Mitch McConnell on why he refuses to bring that legislation to the floor. Instead she falls back to the bothsiderism line of attack, the very thing that has helped drive the current debacle.

It's something. I'm sure there are those who will flag one or two posts a year.
I get the impression there are a lot of Mrs. Kravitz types who flag multiple times a month.
There should be a cap on the amount of flags a month, say one per week maximum.

(10,597 posts)Pelosi and the Democratic leadership need to keep doing what they're doing; passing bills to reopen government, and leave it to Trump to veto them, or Yertle the Laptop to refuse to consider them.
