Let's just say I'm tired of waiting on people to take action that never comes. What can be done that is legal and moral? Evidently, doxxing the kids is immoral (though I think at 18 you are an adult). Writing to the school? How long will they "investigate"? A year? At least long enough for these kids to graduate and go off to college?
So what can we do? I'm seriously asking here.

(17,605 posts)...enrollment. Seems there's been a lot of overlooked shenanigans there anyway.
ProudLib72
(17,984 posts)That's the hangup for me. Or maybe resort to doxxing the parents instead?
I guess just a public shaming of Covington in general would have some effect.

Is just revealing the names also considered doxxing?

(8,231 posts)even just the 'prejudiced' ones...A good example is my sister. She has prejudices, biases....but she is not an all out racist. I think people like that will get disgusted along with us and say hold on a freaking minute here...this is not what we want to be.
At least that's what I'm hoping...always gotta hope!

(5,219 posts)These young need to be exposed to non racist thinking and the school needs to reeds to re-educate them in the core principles of Catholicism and Christianity. Our society has lost this. Punishment alone can't change minds.

(100,038 posts)I think that a lot of the problem is the community. These kids aren't just naturally racist in nature. Racism is a learned trait that really comes from the environment they live in. We could also attribute it to the internet too. I wouldn't be surprised if they posted on 4chan or /pol/.

(25,126 posts)May think twice about the long distance trek to Washington DC for RTL march.
Maybe they will think twice about having their students pose in MAGA hats in official publications.
Some parents will talk to their kids. But racist parents won't.
Some kids in the video will get in trouble.
Other than that, I don't think this incident will change racism.

(17,984 posts)Racism is racism is racism. These little fuckers are exactly the same as white nationalists. That needs to to be stressed.

(3,741 posts)on the Omaha reservation for the summer? Might give them some character and, introduce them to manhood, where their school, parents, and religion have failed.
ProudLib72
(17,984 posts)Remain incommunicado from their parents for three months. Just have a native foreman directing them. Oh, they could build some houses, a school, improve the roads, get groceries (not sure about the food desert situation on that rez). There is no end of the things they could do!

His actions have consequences. He should learn that.

(17,984 posts)Saying that her poor wittle son is being harassed. So we have competing social media platforms, and the MSM is not likely to take a side. That's what really bothers me. Without any actual criminal punishment, freedom of speech becomes a yelling match between left and right. Drives me up the frigging wall! So frustrating!

(17,984 posts)My primary goals would be 1) to expose their behavior as racist (I want that label to stick, no weaseling out, no excusing) 2) provide some sort of consequence to serve as instruction for them. It's the second part that I'm most concerned with. Whatever consequence is chosen, it needs to be a form of restorative justice. That's why I like the idea of them doing community service on the reservation for the summer.
WhiskeyGrinder
(22,308 posts)1. Expose to whom? What would it look like to have that label "stick"?
2a. Are you in a position to provide a consequence? Are you in a position to influence those who are?
2b. Are you Native American? Many in the NA community are pushing back on the idea of community service on reservations, which can set up a mindset of white savior-ism or reinforce the idea that Native Americans are people who deserve only pity and charity, rather than fostering empathy.
ProudLib72
(17,984 posts)1) Expose the kids, the chaperones, the school through censure? Now what that looks like could be as simple as a statement from the archdiocese (which has already happened: http://www.weku.fm/post/officials-diocese-covington-kentucky-high-school-apologize-students-actions ). It could be a stiffer "punishment" in not allowing students from that school to participate in any public rallies. But for it to stick, the archdiocese would need to use the term "racism" in their denouncement.
2a) I'm not sure. That's part of why I was asking the question in the OP. But I suppose that writing to the school or to the archdiocese of Covington might be a start. Would it be influential in any way?
2b) Nope, not native. I can understand the sentiment. If not on the reservation itself, there are plenty of other places service could be done (for instance, the Kentucky Native American Heritage Museum: https://www.knahm.org/ ). Barring outright service to the community, then empathy class.

(3,268 posts)Will Pitt posited today that "The internet always wins". I'll add this-the internet along with "Rock and Roll" never forgets. Just like the mention of Pitt's name will years later recall a single particular criticism of President Obama these bastards have received their asterisk and for the balance of their life it will accompany them on every public mention. If nothing else brings them notoriety in their lifetime then that photo will appear in their Obit. Several will try to capitalize and as many to hide it away. Hell, a few may even try to atone. But the moving finger has writ etc, etc, etc. So let it be written, so let it be done...

(7,947 posts)and ask what a Catholic school should do with a student who deliberately intimidated an old man out of racism?
And if they say, "It's not racism!"
Reply... "Well, that just shows what you are teaching your boys, and we better let the world know: Covington Boys School thinks it's just fine for its students to intimidate and insult non-white army veterans performing a religious ceremony!"
The school has the most to use, and unlike the unfortunate nasty mom, they don't love this big brat. They don't want bad publicity.

(10 posts)We old Native Americans don't like to be taunted...especially in our face.
Send the young man that did the "in face" taunting down to Camp Lejeune; for three months of Marine Corp boot training and the young man wish he was in hell, as it would be better on his body and soul.
