The only way to end this shutdown

is to have Congress pass a veto-proof bill.

Trump will never capitulate, but not for the reasons others have proposed. He will not capitulate because he has narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). Anyone unfortunate enough to have lived with someone who has NPD will tell you that once a narcissist decides to get someone to do something, he simply refuses to give up. And since most people don’t realize they’re dealing with a narcissist, the narcissist almost always gets his way. The narcissist’s relentlessness in trying to get what he wants is stronger than any normal person’s will or determination. He makes life so miserable for his target that the target eventually decides they want to end their misery more than they want to avoid giving the narcissist what he wants. What Trump is doing is using a narcissist’s relentless manipulative tactics to get his wall. And, at this point, there is literally nothing that can get him to give up on his wall.

If Democrats negotiate with Trump, this will just teach Trump that this is how long he needs to shut down the government the next time he wants something from Congress. Speaker Pelosi recognizes this. But it’s very important that other Democrats understand it as well.

The only way this ends well is if the Republicans in the Senate decide they’ve had enough and pass the House bills to fund the government with a veto-proof majority. And I believe we are at least one, if not two or three months, away from that point.

3. It's the only way the shutdown will end.

The only other possibility is that the Democrats cave and give Trump his wall. And if that happens, we will have another shutdown in, oh, I’d say two or three months.

6. Right. But again, it will be the Republicans in the Senate

who decide the shutdown is hurting them more than it’s hurting the Democrats and pass a veto-proof bill. So far, they’re still looking for ways to get the public to blame the Democrats.

In fact, even in that case, I think it will take them a week or so of trying to blame the Democrats before they vote on a clean bill.

4. As a taxpayer, speaking for myself - I will NOT fund this POSs wall...

The promise "Mexico will pay for the wall" is getting lost in the messaging...

FFS - Mexico is NOT paying for the WALL...thus - NO WALL!!!! = NO pesos - NO Wall...

10. A wall would also be a permanent reminder

that a narcissist always gets his way. It would be very painful for people who are trying to stand up against their own NPDs. It might even empower other NPDs out there.

Of course, that’s a small reason compared to all the other reasons to be against the wall, the biggest of which is that it would be an ugly display of the racism and hatred that are tearing this country apart.

5. Disaster or War
Tue Jan 22, 2019, 01:51 PM

I can only really see two ways out of this.

1) Some sort of natural or man made disaster that puts extreme pressure on the government to act and be "fully functional".

2) Basically war, a bit like after 9/11, that overwhelms the political process and forces congress to act.

After those two, it's going to take some really harsh impacts to change the basic dynamic and that could be months in the making.

I said I thought the only way out was going to be when Dems finally caved b/c Trump wont allow himself to lose and the GOP dont have enough moderates anymore to break and have a veto proof majority.

11. I really hope Democrats will be able to stand firm.

Because caving on this would just set a precedent in Trump’s mind. He would feel triumphant, the way narcissists do when they get what they want. It wouldn’t be long before the next shutdown.

If the public does not respond to Republican tricks and blames the Republicans in increasing numbers, then maybe Mitch McConnell will finally cave. But Trump’s approval rate would have to go much lower.

I don't see that happening any time soon.

he will get burnt badly, his party is going down. And I have said it before but Mueller and his team probably has Mitch in their sight.

He's going along with this shutdown, because he believes it will cripple the FBI, and he'll be able to slip out of it. He is deluded if he thinks he'll get away with it.

the Republicans will listen to business owners. I hate to do this I do not want to hurt local operations. Many of us have already cut back but we need a lot of people to do it to get the Republicans screaming at their senators.

Over 800,000 aren’t getting paid. This shutdown will destroy the economy. That will hurt Trump and get the Republicans to act. But I fear it will take a long time.

16. I believe that eventually this will happen if it's needed
Tue Jan 22, 2019, 03:18 PM

One more election cycle will seal the deal.

The blue wave aimed at the Senate will do it.

There will be a holy mess to clean afterwards but it will also be the perfect opportunity to do some real house cleaning of archaic laws, practices and traditions. It will be an opportunity to cut out the dead weight of corruption and make laws to guard our government from future corruption. Loopholes will need to be re-thought and dealt with.

I hate to say this but Presidential powers need to be tightened up. Wars need to again be Congressionally declared, or there needs to be a clear path to Presidential involvement in military action in the world. I get that you can’t declare war on terrorism, thus my comment about a clear path to military action.

We will be able to join the world again, only my hope is that it will be as an equal among nations. Superpowers should be a thing of a failed past history for the world.

Am I overly optimistic? Yeah, but if there’s enough Ocasio-Cortez kind of Congresspeople we can get this done.

I think that Congress will eventually have to pass an automatic continuing resolution that will make these shutdowns obsolete. It should simply not be possible to shut down the government. If there is no budget, things should continue at the same funding level automatically. There is no reason this can’t be done. Other countries don’t shut themselves down like this.

But for all that to happen, we liberals have to avoid repeating past mistakes. We have to be on the lookout for Russian-funded attacks against Democrats. We have to stop fighting each other.

19. Democrats need to learn to be proactive all the time
Tue Jan 22, 2019, 03:49 PM
Jan 2019

We can’t just be reactive.

The Republicans gained this power they have through decades of proactive work. It’s the only reason they gained this power. Had the Democrats done this Trump would not be President.

Just because you’re right and a good guy doesn’t mean you don’t get to fight like a badass for the people of this country.
