I think he knew when he appointed volcker fed chair that he would jack up interest rates, and surely he understood that would cause a recession.

I can't imagine the interview process not covering that ground.

In any event, he allowed it to happen and did nothing to stop it.


IMHO, that was a rare case of a president falling on his sword to do what he thought best for the country.
