1. Maduro seems to be winning, unfortunately. Zero military defections.

And we're pulling the diplomatic corps out. Rookie mistake: Trump jumped the gun here, and unfortunately probably cemented Maduro in power for another decade.

2. Venezuela is a sovereign nation

It is not for the US to decide who is President. Fuck that.
Most of the world would like to see the stupid cretin in the WH removed.
The Venezuelan mess has not changed. Exxon wants the oil for free - ask the fools in Guyana about their deal and of course most of Guyana's oil is in the disputed border territory with said Venezuela.

3. As long as the military backs him

He has little more to worry about than Trump and his shutdown. What little resources Venezuela has at its disposal are at his personal command as long as the military protects him. Like North Korea, if the military and the top bosses have enough to eat, what does he care about the rest of the population if they can't touch him? As long as he lets the military share in what resources there are left there, they will continue to kiss his shoes. The second the populace seems ready to overthrow him with the abandon of those who have nothing left to lose, the military will publicly hang him in front of the presidential palace, but they aren't there yet.
