(8,231 posts)mourning doves. If I recall correctly that failed so the people of MN want to kill mourning doves...."just because".

(6,344 posts)I had no idea this kind of thing was going on - this killing of wildlife for the fun of it.
There is no place for the slaughter of animals like this.
Minnesota needs to pass some new regulations stopping it. Thanks for your actions!

For context, I grew up in the west in a ranching family.
Coyotes, in many states, are so far from endangered that worrying about their population from hunts like these is, frankly, absurd. They are designated pests, meaning you can shoot them without a license and without a limit, because of their huge and bothersome population. They kill livestock. They kill pets. They kill working dogs. They are a threat to the livelihood of many in these areas. I saw one study that said coyotes kill over 10,000 sheep and lambs in MT every year. That's about a quarter of the total loss and represents a serious threat to the people raising those sheep for a living.
On top of that, the killing is swift and not cruel and the numbers taken are so miniscule that it has no impact on the population. Montana Fish and Wildlife has said there is no concern at all that hunting will cause a population decline in coyotes. In fact, government agencies and trappers kill more coyotes every year than hunters do.
As to the foxes, I don't know much about that but I'd assume it's a very similar story. For the person above concerned about endangered foxes: I think it is safe to assume, and actually pretty obvious, that the species being targeted in these hunts are far from endangered.
Why are you trying to silence debate by deleting threads when someone disagrees with you?

I believe in peaceful coexistence as far as possible. I'm not a country girl and I'm not a hunter, but that said, California is coyote country, so I've adjusted.

Considering what might have happened to him, a not-so-wily coyote managed to get inside the Nashville Music City Center on a Sunday evening earlier this month, running past the convention centers security checkpoints and into an exhibit hall where a boat show had just been held. Employees were able to confine the wayward coyote to a restroom by lowering a gate.
When Officer Brenna Hosey with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department was dispatched to the convention center, she figured it was probably really just a stray German shepherd or other dog that had wandered into the building.
I look around the corner and sure enough, like perched up on the sink, is a coyote, Hosey told WKRN. She and some Metro Animal Control officers used catch poles to nudge the coyote off of the counter.
In many situations where a coyote is in the wrong place at the wrong time, it would be euthanized, but thanks to Hoseys compassion, this coyote lucked out.
