Several blue states are adding laws which require all candidates in primaries to disclose their tax returns. They need to require this of all candidates on the ballot for Presidential General Elections ! Give 45 a choice -- disclose the shady deals in his taxes, or lose tens of millions of popular votes. Even if only blue states that didn't give 45 any Electoral College votes passed such laws, it would highlight his illegitimacy if he manages somehow (ie: Russia helps) to win the EC.

We need to know who all of our candidates are beholden to and if they have been honest. Tax returns are a good way to get insights into both.

(58,785 posts)tax returns from all candidates for federal office. That will, of course, set a standard that states will feel compelled by their voters to meet.
Btw, HR1 is now officially called the "For the People Act," previously unofficially referred to as "Democracy reform." A hugely important package of legislation we'll have to take control of the senate away from the Republicans to pass, but 2020 is visible on the horizon.
"Known as HR 1 or what Democrats are calling the For the People Act, the bill would make sweeping changes to the country's federal voting system and promote automatic voter registration, internet registration and early voting, as well as prohibit states from restricting a voter's ability to cast mail-in ballots. The legislation would also seek to bolster election security by imposing changes like requiring voting systems to be tested at least nine months before any federal election.
The legislation makes broad campaign finance reforms like barring contributions from businesses that have significant foreign influence and "requires super PACs, 501(c)(4) groups and other organizations spending money in elections to disclose donors who contribute more than $10,000. It also imposes ethics rules on Congress and the executive branch."

Among other things the Republicans are going to fight tooth and nail to prevent being passed into law. Rep. John Sarbanes of Maryland is heading it up.
We wanted it, we gave our reps partial power and got this far. Now we have to vote to give our senators the power to join with the house to make it law.
