Black Clemson players wanted nothing to do with Trump's cold fast-food feast

trump's fast food event was boycotted by a number of Clemson football players https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/1/29/1830711/-Black-Clemson-players-wanted-nothing-to-do-with-Trump-s-cold-fast-food-feast

Yet another group of elite athletes has revealed that they refused to subject themselves to the disgusting disappointment promised by a visit to Donald Trump’s White House. One crucial fact seems to have been overlooked in favor of the well-deserved disgust over the president’s room-temperature value meal.

The Root has the exclusive:

The Root spoke with three black Clemson players who each separately confirmed that many players, both black and white, had no interest in making the trip. All three acknowledged that Donald Trump was the reason they chose not to attend. Even more telling, most of Clemson’s white players were in attendance while nearly three-fourths of the school’s black football players took a hard pass on the chance to eat cold fries with the president of people who eat salads from McDonald’s.

The players, speaking anonymously, reported that just 15 black players—out of at least 57 on the roster—opted to smash cold pizza with the popular-vote-loser on Jan. 14. That means roughly three out of four black players chose to stay home, which actually is better than the grifter in chief’s polling with African-Americans.

My kids love instant ramen noodles but I'm not going to serve them that for dinner when I can make perfectly good pasta. And a treat for an accomplishment would NOT be ramen noodles or a cheap hamburger.

The event was supposed to be special. The team dressed up for the occasion in order to have a meal with the (disgraceful) president of the United States. The least he could have done was provide a chef prepared dinner offering salmon, chicken, or steak. Lobster if he was feeling generous. Burgers would have been fine if they were invited to a barbecue (still prepared by a chef or local grillmaster).

Serving them fast food for this event was disgraceful.

But the author didn't even mention it, focusing instead on crafting her own colorful commentary about how disgusting she found it.

Not now. Major colleges have nutritionists and cooks just for the players. They get better meals than most of us.

Forming a partnership with Aramark, the Clemson football nutrition program serves its players top-notch foods that are ideal for providing them with the appropriate and healthy nourishment required of performing at a high level on the gridiron. McCain and Foreman are passionate about their crafts, constantly tweaking the menu and making notice of each player’s dietary preferences and needs.[link:https://clemsontigers.com/fueling-the-tigers/|

I see nothing wrong with this. If it was their main source of nutrition, then maybe you would have a point.

I like an occasional unhealthy snack, but I don't have snacks for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Lighten up.

....I made it a point of telling my school's President flat out that if by some twist of fate said Kavadouche came to campus that I would not attend any talks or the like even if they made it mandatory. I'd take whatever lumps came my way for standing up for my principals then. Said President was on board with me in the extremely unlikely event that were to happen since we're just a little Podunk school that the Kavadouches of the world look down upon - that they would never make students attend then.

It doesn't appear that the athletic administration pressured anyone to go. To those not familiar with South Carolina and Clemson, that may not seem a big deal, but it is. It's a huge deal.

The article does not (at least on a quick read) contain a single player criticism of the "cold fast-food feast."

What is notable is the disparity in attendance (most of the white players attended; most of the black players did not). None of them cited the food as the issue - they just didn't want to chill with Trump. That's a big difference.

There are other buried facts, but I'm pretty disgusted that the focus was on the food served (almost exclusively provided by the author's running commentary) - not the significant issue that black players overwhelmingly chose not to attend and that some who did attend did so because they were worried about retaining scholarships.
