Only difference is I LIVED and grew up in the south.

When I was pregnant with my son in 1969, I went to my doctor one day and noticed a sign in a room on the side of the building, separate from the bigger front waiting area. It said “Colored Waiting Room”. It didn’t startle or surprise me at the time because that is just the way it was. Water fountains out in public were labeled, too. White Only and Colored. Service stations had three bathrooms. Women, Men and Colored. The Colored bathrooms were unisex. And “Colored people” just knew better than to even attempt to eat at a “white” restaurant. This was in south Mississippi on the Gulf Coast.

My father was very liberal (a democrat for sure) who was influenced by his older brother who leaned toward socialism. So while he spoke about the injustice, we were instructed to never talk to others about it because of the danger it could bring on us. Crosses were burned for far less than thinking like that. My early childhood through age 14 was in Jackson, Mississippi.
