The demographics of Texas are changing and moving towards a blue state. Romney won Texas by 16% and trump was held to 9%. Carnival Cruz only on by 3.5%. Senator Box Turtle aka Cornyn is worried https://www.politico.com/story/2019/02/04/cornyn-texas-reelection-battle-1142878
Meanwhile, millions of new voters have flocked to the state in recent years, and reliably Republican areas in the suburbs outside Dallas and Houston where Cornyn has racked up big margins in past elections have shifted hard toward Democrats....
Democrats say that Trump is a big part of why Texas grew more competitive in the last three years, and that Cornyns ties to the president will be a weakness in the general election.
Cornyn has wrapped himself around Trump from the very beginning and he will be wrapped around Trump in the general election in 2020 by Democrats every single day, said Gilberto Hinojosa, chairman of the Texas Democratic Party. It will be a competitive race and it's a race we believe we can win even though we won't be able to match the amount of money that he's able to raise simply because it's a presidential election, with Trump on the ballot.
There are a ton of hard core democrats working hard to turn Texas blue. trump may help accelerate the process.

Is it the Indivisible groups who are active against Cornyn, the local Dems, or both??

(20,186 posts)I'm no fan of Cornyn, but he will be harder to beat than Cruz because Ted is such a jerk. Ted may have lost by only 3.5%, but that's because 400K who voted for Governor Greg Abbott voted for Beto O'Rourke. Will even more Republicans abandon Cornyn? I doubt it.

(56,828 posts)On the other hand, O'Rourke is charismatic, a proven fundraiser and won't have to travel the entire state building name recognition like he did against Cruz.

(1,399 posts)I remember hearing some pollster late last year talking about how Cornyn may be more vulnerable than Cruz. He didn't go into details but I assume it was due to changing demographics plus Cruz's ability to get out that deplorable base more effectively and perhaps a Hispanic surname. Straight ticket voting is also off the table now though I think that will help more in 2022 when especially odious candidates like Paxton and Patrick might be on the ballot again.
I think the best way to flip TX in 2020 is for O'Rourke to run against Cornyn, Castro to be VP pick with someone like Kamala, and a very aggressive voter drive in urban and Hispanic areas, like a million or more new voters on the rosters. O'Rourke has proven he can bring in the cash like crazy and gets the millennials and urban voters to the polls, and he won't be running against a LINO (Latino in Name Only) this time. And Castro will bring an extra notch of enthusiasm among Hispanic voters, the one group that O'Rourke didn't perform quite as well with as he needed to. An unpopular Trump would help tremendously of course.
And win or lose, the massive amount of money that the national Rs would have to pour into the state would be that much less that they could use in MI, FL, OH, WI, PA, IA, AZ, etc. I think AZ will be the surprise state in 2020, it's getting less red as quickly as TX and has been slightly less Republican to begin with the past two decades.
I sincerely hope by the time Cruz's second term is up in 2024 he will not run again, knowing that he probably can't win.
