If Democrats feel they must circle the wagons around an embattled Democratic elected official, and fight like hell for him despite his flaws because any Democrat is better than any Republican, why don't they kick out the governor with the proven, documented, admitted racist past who has shown himself to be completely incapable of handling himself in a crisis and then circle the wagons around the black Lieutenant Governor with a squeaky clean history marred only by one unproven, uncorroborated, highly suspicious allegation against him?
I mean, if we're going to pick one of the two to fight for, why not, this time, pick the black guy, protect him, defend him and fight like hell for him?
I think this is a great plan.
Deal?

(56,198 posts)It does make a difference if the replacement is another democrat or a republican; if it's a safe state/district or not, etc.
That's not to condone improper behavior, ever; but choosing the punishment and timing is necessary to avoid just making the problem worse in practice.

As for Northam, I'll paraphrase: the person can take himself out of the rethug party, but you can't take the rethug out of the person.

(19,741 posts)No room for racists, repugs or dems. Let alone one so out of touch his wife has to tell him it is inappropriate to moonwalk during his press conference changing his story from an apology to it wasnt me.

(14,249 posts)I suspect he also is hoping to smear Justin Fairfax and sow enough doubt in people that they'll back off of forcing Northam out.

(110,259 posts)and they couldn't come up with anything.. And we know they were trying.
He's the one we should be supporting now, not Northam.
I mean, since we now think it's fine to tolerate, excuse and forgive bad behavior in our elected officials as long as they're Democrat if we want to keep Republicans at bay, why not stand by the black guy accused of something that hasn't been proven at all rather than the guy who admitted to wearing blackface and who, at least until the other day, thought he had hung out at parties with people dressed in KKK robes while he wore said blackface?

(3,900 posts)But you know as sure as day follows night, when the time comes to step up for the swarthy young Justin, folks will suddenly demand to jump off the Redemption Express and pivot back to "So what if there's no proof. The allegation is enough! We have too much riding on this. We can't afford to take a chance with a flawed politician! We can't lower our standards. If we let him get away with it, the Republicans will be all over us," etc., etc.
And, of course "Identity Politics."

(315 posts)I am good with that IF there is unity in that action. If not then we are going to have infighting and that is not good either.
Act_of_Reparation
(9,116 posts)If the party officially backs him, there are some who will (rightfully) disagree and there will be infighting. If the party kicks him to the curb, there will be some who disagree, and there will be infighting.
Wanna know the best way to avoid infighting? Not making yourself up in blackface.

(315 posts)I guess what I am saying is has the party done everything it can publicly? I think the guy should have stepped down days ago. But given that he hasn't how much longer should democrats continue to talk about it publicly while it is being used to portray the party as though it is in disarray?
Act_of_Reparation
(9,116 posts)I mean, all they can do publicly is call on Northam to resign. If he needs incentivizing, I'm sure they'll put the screws to him behind the scenes.
