3. I wouldn't just say that "good is dumb"...

...but that, now, there is such a cult of outrage in our midst (generated at least partially for good reason, as a result of decades or centuries of mistreatment) that there really is zero tolerance for any missteps, no matter how long ago or how repented. The only acceptable reaction is mortal offense and unforgiving ostracism (“Go away, and never come back!”). And Republicans are using it as a martial art; turning our own desire for justice against us.

I’m not saying that people of color have no right to be offended by whites wearing blackface. I’m not saying Native Americans have no right to be offended by Europeans claiming Native tribal membership on the basis of a minute percentage of DNA. And I’m certainly not saying that women have no right to be offended by men behaving boorishly toward them. But, as long as every single incident that can cause offense to others is considered at the same high-crimes level, and as long as the sentence must always be the political “death penalty,” we shouldn’t be surprised when we continue losing power to an opposition with no such scruples.
