I am glad Pelosi didn't rush to judgment.
She said our leaders have to have the confidence of their constituents, but didn't assume anyone's guilt.
She said she is busy enough with other matters (which is true).

(1,201 posts)A conservative republican against choice and most of what Dems stand for. Seems they lack the ability to forgive, understand people change and accept the best that men can become to the point of blindly replacing the proven good with the proven worst. Not just shooting themselves in the foot but blowing their foot off. Think ahead VA Dems.

(34,510 posts)We in VA appreciate that. IMHO the Repubs are trying to take over by illegitimate means, without due process. Investigations have already been initiated and need to be given a chance to play out.

(16,139 posts)what is the general feeling there about all of this?
Curious to know, since most of us don't live there and really have no idea what the people who elected these guys think.

(34,510 posts)problems involving Northam, Fairfax and Herring. I can tell you that, prior to these allegations, people in my circle (FWIW) did NOT view any of them as DINOs, and that perception is consistent with their records. At the same time, the Dem. party here is pragmatic and understands that this is becoming a purplish state, not a blue one, and they typically nominate "moderate" (but not right leaning) gubernatorial candidates because they believe that is what it takes to win.
I am unaware of ANYONE who thought any of the three were sexist or racist before the latest allegations based on actions we know about. I think it is fair to say that the average voter would NOT want the statewide offices turned over to Republicans at this point.
Northam won handily over a well-known Republican, Ed Gillespie.

My Repub., religious relatives in the southern part of the state dislike Northam, probably mostly because of his pro choice actions. Northam also has stirred up some discontent in NoVA, where I live, because he supports keeping the tax windfall VA is receiving as a result of the Repub. federal tax cut bill, which capped state property, income, etc., tax deductibility (VA income tax rules are closely tied to Federal rules). He wants to use this for social programs. Although our tax rates are not high compared to those in other states, income and property values in NoVA are high, so the result is that you have to make a lot more money and pay a lot more money for a house, to have the same quality of life as in other places. So the tax bites harder.
My guess is that the Washington Post will eventually publish an article on what Virginians are thinking, but it probably will be mostly based on anecdotes.

(16,102 posts)Let us Virginians resolve our issues!
I welcome the input of non-Virginians, but it's up to those of us who live and work here to resolve this and to deal with it...preferably in a way that will prevent us from ceding control to Republicans and having to begin from square one again!!!
We must acknowledge the nightmare that will befall us, should the Republicans take control, it may only last until the next election cycle, but it will create a divide that will take years to repair!
AGREE!!

What if the considerations of black voters, for instance, are overshadowed by the majority in Virginia?

(14,565 posts)Doing nothing is certainly more available now than it would have been 10 years ago, when Virginia had yet to tip slightly our way.
We need to stop pretending our bench is so great. Big picture perspective it can't be great. Losing all those office holders in 2010 through 2014 across the country is what enables a Ralph Northam to switch allegiance and win a nomination like this. Otherwise we'd have several superior choices lined up above him.

(1,533 posts)If you aren't a VA resident, it doesn't really matter what you think as you can't vote for or against. The number of people that want to screw with another State's elected representatives is annoying. I really don't understand why some people are so excited to mess with politics in a state where their opinion means absolutely nothing.
