(14,249 posts)Im no fan of Roberts - not even close - but I do think hes an essentially decent person who cares about the Court. And I cant imagine that he wants the Court to turn into a Trump dump on his watch.
AND I think Trump did himself no favors giving that hot mess of a SOTU speech right in Roberts face. What jurist in their right mind would want to be associated, even remotely, with that?

(3,148 posts)because if he does and we don't flip the Senate. Guess what is going to happen? Whoever runs against Susan Collins needs to constantly remind people she voted for 2 supreme court justices that have went on to vote in favor of anti-abortion laws.

(18,359 posts)for the next election. I always thought that was his reason for his ACA decision.
Of course he pro-corporate decision that puts money into the pockets of the oligarchy will happily go the "right" way.

(15,686 posts)I hope this is the beginning of a trend.
Since Kavanaugh's confirmation I've been thinking my mother's death and the hell our family's been through may have meant nothing.
This gives me hope.
(Mom died from an abortion back in the day and her death scene photo became public. She's the beautiful woman in my sigline.)
EffieBlack
(14,249 posts)She was very beautiful.

(15,686 posts)Thank you, appal_jack. Supporting choice and remembering all the women who died this way - there were so many before Roe. Most aren't known the way my mother is but that's the only difference. They all suffered the same tragic, needless death and their family and friends had to go on without them.
I really haven't been doing my part lately. It's time I renewed my own efforts.

(3,813 posts)The photo of the death scene is viscerally painful (and yet also so important) to face and see, and I not a relative or direct friend (though now that you and I are conversing, Control-Z, I consider her a friend in spirit).
I can only imagine the pain you have carried, and thank you for the work you have done to honor her memory and the freedoms that ensure women do not face these risks again.
to you, Control-Z. Take care of yourself, because doing so honors your mother in important ways as well,

(15,686 posts)Honestly, I'm touched. You have reminded how the photo has worked over the years. It has actually changed a few minds. And it brings together like minded people who care about women.
I've been putting off an email regarding my mom for far too long. I'm going to try and take care of that in the coming week.
Thank you, again, for reminding me how important it is and for your compassionate note here.

(2,916 posts)I remember seeing that photo a couple of decades ago, online, and my heart goes out to you and your family.
I, too, hope Roberts will become more of a swing vote on such important issues. We need someone to counteract the poison this disgrace has injected into the Supreme Court.
Control-Z
(15,686 posts)strangers saw that photo of my mom before I even knew how she had died. There were so many lies back then, and shame. It hasn't changed as much as it should because the anti-choice won't let it.
Roberts has surprised me starting with the ACA. I've watched him since the day he was confirmed and he is not what I expected. I thought Roe was seeing its last days. I hope he turns out to be the swing vote he appears to be.

(18,359 posts)Roberts was one of the three that dissented.
https://www.statesman.com/NEWS/20160915/Supreme-Court-strikes-down-Texas-abortion-regulations
The courts conservative bloc Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito was opposed.
Writing in dissent, Thomas said the majority ruling exemplifies the courts troubling tendency to bend the rules when any effort to limit abortion, or even to speak in opposition to abortion, is at issue.

(1,588 posts)He didn't look happy to me at the SOTU at all. In fact he looked a little disgusted at what took place as he was leaving. I think Roberts is a fair man that leans right and he knows what tRump is and disapproves.
EffieBlack
(14,249 posts)I have a feeling Roberts doesn't want to be seen anywhere near him, literally or philosophically.
He probably feels the same way about Kavanaugh, although he must be cordial and collegial with him.
Can you imagine how horrified Roberts must have been watching that hot mess of his testimony and realizing he was going to be his colleague?
PeeJ52
(1,588 posts)tRump and Kavanaugh are a disservice to government in Robert's view. I would have loved to seen Roberts when he was watching that outburst by Kavanaugh... I bet he would have tripped over his jaw if he stood up..
