From the article:
"Warren received a standing ovation from tribal leaders and other Native attendees as she approached the stage."
And:
Warren "was warmly welcomed at Tuesdays event. She could barely make it through the crowd of about 150 people as she was trying to leave, with attendees swarming her for photos and hugs by the door."
Newly elected Native American Congressperson Deb Haaland in introducing Warren:
Indian Country needs strong allies like Elizabeth Warren, whose unwavering commitment to Native communities and Native American women and children is needed in this political era.

(11,726 posts)Kind of how minorities have to navigate the world differently than White people do. I am not a woman but I am a minority and have been in situations where my race put me into danger that would not likely befall the average White person. Having grown up around some pretty strong and assertive women, I learned that women's survival, health, and safety are precarious as a sole result of their womanhood in many situations.
When your survival depends on viewing the world through a much wider, but at the same time, more focused lens, you start to really see the world as it is, not as you would like it to be. You see not only your own challenges, but the challenges of other people.
That is why I think it is usually up to women to get things right. They actually have the capacity to get things right. Not to say that men never have the capacity to get things right or do the right thing, but when you have the privilege of messing up and not receiving significant consequences for messing up, you tend to become over confident in your abilities.
Anyway, my two cents. As a man, I would not mind seeing a world where women assume political power. I don't think men's lives would change all that much, except we'd have to stop acting like assholes.

(6,007 posts)In the email I said all she needs to say is that while growing up, the family kept talking about their Indian heritage. She was proud of it and wanted to acknowledge that. She wanted to stand up for the minority by embracing it. That's all.
I accepted what my parents and grandparents told me when I was growing up. She was bold enough to actually find out and truthful enough to tell the world what she found out.

(11,726 posts)but from what has been said about some of the leaders of the Cherokee Nation, it seems more political than actual about the alleged cultural appropriation. I remember reading somewhere that the Cherokee leadership is aligned with right wingers and Trump, so naturally they will jump on a progressive person for any controversy involving Native heritage.
Native Americans are not a monolith as with any other group of people. There are hundreds and hundreds of bands, tribes, nations, and groups all of whom have their own political stances, agendas, and alliances.
It is encouraging to see those leaders embracing Warren. I think Warren is a very good person and her policy stances seem to be for the good of all non-wealthy people.

(34,358 posts)So her family history was wrong. So she checked the wrong box on an application 30 years ago. WHO CARES?!? What this is really about is that she's a threat to Wall Street, that she's a threat to the 1%, that she's a threat to the republican party and they're going to use any ratfucking dirty trick to bring her down.
The one thing I'm afraid of is that they won't let this go just like they didn't let go of the lie that Al Gore said that he invented the Internet and this nothing non-issue will doom her candidacy.
Bradshaw3
(7,491 posts)Strong Native American voices like yours, the women at the conference and others pushing back against that narrative.
This issue really touches me because I grew up with Native Americans, went to powwows and studied their culture and literature in college, and have seen how badly they have been mistreated. This country misses so much by not listening to what Native peoples have to say, especially about the environment.

was relying on family lore in the days before there was readily available DNA testing. She wouldn't have taken the test if she thought it wouldn't reveal Native American heritage. Those DNA test results surprise a lot of people. She is far from alone.

(261 posts)but its complicated. I worked around a lot of wannabe Native Americans who always made me uneasy. They would dance in powwows in full native garb. That was in the 80s. I dont think she was doing that, but I still have a complicated response to claiming a heritage that you havent lived. I even feel it myself. Im half Armenian and Im very careful to qualify that Im only half Armenian. When Im asked to check race and have only one choice, I check white. If I have multiple choice I also check Asian. But even then I sort of scoff at myself because Armenian Americans went to court in the 20s to get labeled white for immigration purposes. And I poo pooed the notion that we were survivors of the Armenian genocide, because my grandparents escaped before it. When I hit my 40s it finally dawned on me that perhaps I had inherited my grandmothers hidden grief over the loss of her parents.

(7,491 posts)I am happy and really kind of relieved to see the reactions on this thread, including from those who I think support other candidates. This non-issue should not deter people from considering her, and hopefully it won't be used as some way to distract from her accomplishments and goals.

(15,311 posts)They must pontificate "breathlessly" about how much this native American Warren scandal is going to harm her election chances.
The media demands their pound of flesh. Warren being warmly welcomed like this doesn't fit the media plan.
They want answers dammit because the average voter cares so much more about this than infants in cages
