So, this happened today at work...

A discussion was going on in the break room about Trump lying in regards to attendance at last night's MAGAWALL rally in El Paso, TX.
At some point, I said, "Yeah, well Trump's always lying. What else would you expect?" I guess this got one of the Magaboys riled up.
He says, "Fuck You!" I laughed. He shouts "Shut Up!" I laughed again, and asked, "Are you my boss?", knowing full well he's not. He then shouts "Fuck You!!!" even louder. He then starts ranting about how "all you fuckin' libtards hate this country, blah, blah, blah...!!!". His supervisor, who was in the room, says, "Chill out. Now.". Magaboy then gets up, gets in my face, and screams "Fuck You, Commie!!!" I snickered. He sucker punched me in the eye, and leg sweeps me. I hit the floor, and he jumps on me, with a box cutter (unopened) in his hand. The other guys pulled him off me, and dragged him out of the room. The last time I saw him, he was in the boss' office, blubbering like a baby. The boss told him to get out of his office. The boss asked me if I was OK, did I want to go to the clinic, did I want to call the police, etc. Except for the swelling, I was OK, and I didn't want the cops involved. I have no time to be going to court over this slug. I'm pretty sure the boss was concerned with a lawsuit, as well, but that won't happen. I like my boss a lot, and love my job.

This is what things have come to. Magaboys losing their shit over something most Americans are in agreement on. Pathetic.

Wed Feb 13, 2019, 10:39 AM
Feb 2019

a) you work is politically-related (obviously)
or
b) quick private exchange with a coworker who agrees with you

If somebody starts some political discussion in the break room, I walk away. Bad feelings can spill over into work time and that is not what my boss is paying me for.

All that said, I don't blame the OP for a quick retort, and certainly he shouldn't have been physically attacked, and the aggressor should have been marched out of the building, terminated on the spot, as it sounds like there were plenty of witnesses.

But stuff like this is why I have my rule. Oh and when I've had direct reports, I make them aware of my rule. As a suggestion (it wouldn't override other aspects of job performance unless egregious), but I would remind them if I knew they broke it. No one ever did, to my knowledge.

The job was to cover the entire building and so I knew all kinds of staff. They had specific supervisors but on some shifts the house supervisor was the immediate person. Staff, especially nursing staff, knew that religion and politics were not to be discussed while they were on the job. The reason was explained to them that both are very emotional topics and if they were discussing them...THEY WERE NOT DOING THEIR JOB. I am sure I walked up on conversations that were stopped when they saw me, so It tried to hang around awhile to "supervise". I did not pay attention if they were at a meal away from their area, but otherwise, I would intervene.

I lived until November of this year in the REDDEST county in NJ. We are one of the wealthiest in America. We flipped the district AND the county seat mayor and council - so now it's purple.

Are there MAGA guys with porches and 50K pick up trucks here? Yep. But there are a lot more struggling to get buy, renting homes in the side roads.

Are there very affluent Democratic Party members here? Yep.

It's very frustrating to think that folks outside of our state think ONLY Republicans are affluent, rich, and wealthy.

Just remember - people 'say' that Booker had too much in donations from Telecom, Pharma and Banking . . . they don't realize those are very often the jobs of Democratics in this state. Who else was he supposed to get in state donations from?

Rest Assured - my little borough is blue. And I hope you aren't thinking 9K a year in property taxes (not state income or sale - JUST property) isn't for a 'mcmansion'.

That's standard for a 1930's or 1940's colonial style home in this town - about 1600 square feet, no driveway or garage. Good luck buying it for less than 300K.

But - your kids go to a kick ass school and can beat the welfare state kids in the long run.

Just who are those who support Trump? The majority were people of higher incomes.

Granted, we've got the Pineys and the rednecks on I-195, South Jersey and above I-80, but what keeps NJ as the number one donor state is it's higher than average income, home to a good majority of millionaires, folks along the Parkway near the shore commuting to NYC and the financial districts of Hudson and Bergen counties... and the majority of them do not vote blue. But, a lot do have multiple homes.

The house itself is about 1500 sq. ft. However I do have 2.3 acres of property.
When we bought the house the taxes were $5000. This year I will have to pay close to $45,000. That’s just property and school tax.
I have no mortgage. Paid off a couple of years ago.
I will have to sell my beloved house because without the deductions I can’t afford to live there.
Don’t understand how the republicans on Long Island can live with this. Many other properties have tax loads of $50,000 to over $100,000 and more.
We’ll see if there is a change shortly. Not sure it will be soon enough for me to keep my house.

They are likely afraid to fire him because he may come back with a gun and shoot people. The guy seems violent and dangerous. We had a couple cases like that in Florida over the last two years, a guy was let go and he came back to the jobsite and shot people, in both cases he targeted people.

I think that the boss should have called the police or at least have an offsite meeting with police to discuss what happened and what may happen.

a good idea to take a dive. Don’t come up fighting and will win the fight in the end. The easiest thing for management is to fire both. If you never take a swing it makes it to hard to fire both.

Talk to your boss tomorrow. You need more and better than what you got so far.

If it were me, I would tell him that I was considering bringing assault charges against the guy. And that so far, the company's only involvement would be to allow the witnesses time off for their testimony.

I also would have gone to the clinic and given the police my statement.

If we let magats get away with violence, they will do it again and again.

I hate to put them down, but restraining orders don't stop truly dangerous people.

I truly don't know what to say about the situation. The boss could fire the MAGAT, but that could likely pave the way to lethal violence from that pinhead. Jumping on someone with a box cutter in hand is not stable, that is a mere second from slicing a person's jugular - the fact that he took out the box cutter says a lot about his propensity for grotesque violence, IMO.

We still live in a civilized community. I know you don’t want to make waves but if the shoe was on the other foot would the maga be not asking for consequences towards you if you were the assaulter? At minimum he should be docked pay. Or Lose his job for making a violent choice. Or being charged with an assault in a legal venue.

Letting him off the hook leads to a bad precedence.

1. Always go to a doctor in case there's a future problem, you have documentation. Your supervisor should've made you just to protect himself. If you end up with an unseen complication, he could be in deep.

2. Consider calling the police. This guy may hurt someone else. He may even try to kill you because he's lost his temper and his job.

I can't understand why management was not more pro-active in protecting you, and the rest of the work force. This guy needs to be gone. And the witnesses need to be put on record, as well. This is huge liability.

It is total dereliction for management not to have escorted this guy off premises, or held him 'till the cops arrived. If you are able to discuss this with an attorney, please do so. The company needs to know this has gone beyond in-house.

Remember the time in our society that an angry hothead (especially physically violent ones) were looked down upon and scorned by most of society? It hasn’t been all that long ago and they would usually feel embarrassed and humiliated after one of their episodes. Now they are empowered and their fuhrer leader in the White House normalizes that behavior. They are proud and think that is showing what a real “man” they are.

None of us are in your shoes and you have your reasons for not pressing charges. But if there is a way to get this on record, you should really do that for your own protection as well as others he may accost so his history is documented.

What about a restraining order? Something needs to be in his file with the police.

That's aggravated assault, a serious felony. You can't let this go. The guy belongs in jail for doing something like this. There are people sitting in jail for a lot less! As for this happening in the workplace-that is a summary firing offense. Assaulting a co-worker can never be tolerated. Forget about a worker's compensation claim, this is about an unsafe workplace. I applaud your toughness in shaking it all off, but being unphased by this violent attack and allowing it to go without being adequately addressed are two different things. It isn't a slight to your boss or to your job to take appropriate steps. Your boss should know that.

Got to make sure all the paperwork is signed, all the big bosses are in line.

I went through this when the Shift Lead was crying at dinner break, and Joel and I were gentlemen about it - encouraged her to call the plant manager, about the owner's pet putting the creepazoid moves on her. We'd gladly have kicked the crap out of him, but she did the right thing, and called the plant manager. Ed showed up, made sure the shift ended and the shop was locked up,
When I rolled in the next day, the day crew was humming like a powerline! After the day crew left, and Creepy was led out bawling (wailing about Why did you report me for that?), they laid me off (I was a temp), and reassigned or laid off the rest of the shift.

Not an ounce of regret, and sharing the story got me another year + of temp work, for someone I had already worked for.
