Trump had this to say at the White House when asked about Bernie Sanders making a second run for the presidency:
Personally, I think he missed his time, Trump said. But I like Bernie.
He is one person that -- on trade, he sort of would agree on trade. The problem is he doesnt know what to do about it.
Trump went on to say Sanders was not treated with respect by Hillary Clinton while insisting he would prevail in his own bid to be re-elected to the White House.
I wish Bernie well, it will be interesting to see how he does, Trump said.
I think what happened to Bernie Sanders four years ago was quite sad.

(4,387 posts)You can't take anything the current White House resident says at face value. So if he says "I like Bernie" it doesn't matter. Nor does it have any bearing on anything.

Back when Ronald Reagan won election, he was running an intense primary against GHWB.
Both sides were splintered worse than HRC & SBS, to the point where Republicans would have lost.
Ronald Reagan and GHWB fucking hated each other--I mean they fucking hated each other.
Instead of staying at odds, Reagan selected GHWB as his VP pick and 12 years of Republican presidency emerged.
Instead of picking a nationally unknown name, one only known by active Dems and regional states, the Democratic Primary winner would be best to select Sanders as their VP pick. No amount of Russian fuckery would surmount that.

No doubt they see Bernie as harmful to Dems thus helpful to Donald, while AOC is a woman too young to run for POTUS.

(3,259 posts)They are pulling what they did to Clinton and getting in on her early and often. By the time AOC is fifty they will have driven her negatives sky high. Fear of the successful woman.

(7,117 posts)Young, smart, charismatic, tough... but they don't.
Luckily, though, their attempts to run up a Dem woman's negatives don't always work. Pelosi's favorables have risen and unfavorables dropped since retaking Speaker, despite the GOP painting her as evil incarnate.

(5,339 posts)is what makes Trump happy? That the "divisiveness" that so many are talking about is actually the hatred for him?
Just some food for thought. Don't let me disuade you from the current round of Bernie bashing.

(31,759 posts)And as I said, the past is an excellent tutor, if we will listen. I choose to support actual Democrats, and it is my fervent hope that Bernie will have the good character to drop out early this time, before he causes real damage to the eventual party nominee.

(5,339 posts)Maybe it isn't Bernie nor his supporters that Trump sees as the problem that will benefit him, but the people on DU that have so much hatred toward Bernie. THAT divisiveness is what makes Trump smile.

(24,692 posts)synonymous with dictatorship though that this the message that the GOP likes to scare people with.
There are many European countries, particularly in Scandinavia, that have very liberal, democratic societies with a mix of 'socialism' and capitalism. 'Socialism' is a scary term only if one buys what conservatives are selling. Bernie seems to support more of a 'European model' for the US more 'socialism' (not 100%, of course) and regulated capitalism (like created by FDR).
