Just look at the Democratic Party platform for 2016, 2012, even 2008 (and no, they weren't significantly influenced by Sanders)

(28,280 posts)And only to candidates running in the general election, not in the primaries.
There has never been a time in the entire history of DU when supporting Sanders as a political figure, or for election to office, was a rule violation. Since it doesn't appear that he intends to run a 3rd party campaign against the party nominee, there will be no "Nader '04" scenario, and supporting him will never be against the site rules.
I'm not a fan of his candidacy either, but let's try to maintain a realistic perspective, and not try to make up site rules that don't exist.

(39,152 posts)opposes him, then he refuses the nomination & declares himself an Independent in the general election. The state Democratic party claims they're just fine with it, but I think it''s sleazy and stacks the deck in his favor. He's been doing it for 12 years.
Bernie Sanders Declines Democratic Senatorial Nomination
Posted By Paul Heintz on Tue, Aug 21, 2018 at 5:50 PM
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has officially turned down the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate, according to the Vermont Secretary of State's Office.
Sanders, who took home nearly 91 percent of the vote in last week's Democratic primary, informed the state last Friday that he would decline the nomination, according to elections director Will Senning. Neither the candidate nor the Secretary of State's Office announced the move at the time, though it hardly comes as a surprise.
A longtime independent, Sanders has sought the Democratic nomination since he first ran for the Senate in 2006, in order to prevent another candidate from taking the ballot line. Each time he has declined the nomination upon winning it. His staff made clear from the start of this year's campaign that this time would be no different.
On Tuesday, the Sanders campaign sent a second letter to the Secretary of States Office turning down the Vermont Progressive Partys nomination. While Sanders did not appear on the Progressive primary ballot, he received enough write-in votes 434 to win that partys nomination, too.
"Senator Sanders is very proud that almost 91% of Vermont Democrats cast their ballots for him last Tuesday," campaign manager Shannon Jackson said in a statement Tuesday. "They know he is fighting every day for them and their families."
Jackson said his boss would continue to vigorously support Democratic candidates up and down the ballot in Vermont and across the country who are standing up against the disastrous Trump administration and fighting for economic, racial, social and environmental justice.
The Vermont Democratic Party appeared ready for the candidate's decision. In a statement issued last Thursday, the day before Sanders turned down the nomination, VDP spokesperson R. Christopher Di Mezzo called the senator "a powerful voice for Democratic values, issues and candidates." He said the party expected Sanders to decline the nomination but would nevertheless "fully and enthusiastically endorse" him at its September state committee meeting.
"With or without the Democratic label next to his name on the ballot, Bernie Sanders is our candidate for U.S. Senate," Di Mezzo said.
Other Democrats have been less forgiving. When Sanders sought the party's presidential nomination in 2016, detractors criticized his longstanding unwillingness to run with a "D" after his name.
He isn't a Democrat that's not a smear, that's what he says, wrote Sanders rival for the nomination, Hillary Clinton, in her post-campaign book, What Happened, adding, I am proud to be a Democrat and I wish Bernie were too.

(6,319 posts)the presumptive nominee, hell win the primary this time. I am prepared to fully support him once he is the nominee. But right now, Im team Kamala even though it is abundantly clear that Benie has changed the game within just a few hours and Biden will have no impact if he runs unless he can come up with innovative and fresh vision for the country to get even minimal media coverage. We gotta work with what we have and so far bernie is most likely to beat trump in the general even if he is not universally liked by dem voters. It also occurred to me that if bernie wins the general, we, clinton suppoerters may have to apologize to our die hard bernie bros.

(10,721 posts)He won't be in a 1-on-1 race, and he won't be running against someone who millions had been conditioned to hate. Sanders was the only option for all of those who were anti-Clinton--so, naturally, he got a lot of votes.
Also, there will be fewer caucuses in 2020.
2nd in Iowa and 1st in New Hampshire propelled Sanders forward. Will he place as high in those states in 2020? Not likely. Then, losses in Nevada and South Carolina will be a clear signal that Sanders has no business sticking around the way he did in 2016.
States voting on Super Tuesday: California, Texas, Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Oklahoma and Vermont. Sanders won just 2 of those states in 2016 (Oklahoma/37 delegates and Vermont/16 delegates) and he lost very badly in most of the others.

(6,309 posts).....not the Chameleon Underground. It's not the Independent Underground.. And lastly, this is not the Independent/Democratic/Independent Underground. There is no such critter as a part-time Democrat.
I challenge that he's a democrat, but I've had posts removed for saying this.
So why do DU moderators think Bernie's a Democrat? He is currently listed as an Independent. DNC rules say one must be a member of the party before announcing candidacy. So does Bernie get magical exceptions to the rules now?

(6,309 posts)..... with someone who can't run on their own merits, and abandons his own party of choice for the short-term benefit of using the Democratic Party only to discard them when they are no longer of use to him, then returns to the party he abandoned in the first place.
