Fake milk is real news, as synthetic alternatives threaten traditional dairy farms
To prevent consumers from becoming confused between regular milk and plant-based milk, dairy farmers are asking the FDA to enforce the definition of milk as lacteal secretion from milking one or more healthy cows."

The old question Got milk? has a complicated answer these days, because it all depends on what you mean by milk.
Consumers could soon be faced with confusion in the dairy aisle as they wonder if the milk theyre drinking came from a cow or was made in a lab.
Perfect Day Foods is one company creating a synthetic milk alternative. It's similar to milk in that it consists of casein and whey, the proteins found in milk. However, a cow was never used to produce their product. Instead, the animal-free dairy product is made in a lab using genetically engineered yeast programmed with DNA to produce the same proteins found in cows milk.
Silicon Valley-based Perfect Day Foods says its animal-free milk is better for the environment and healthier than cows milk because its lactose-free, hormone-free, antibiotic-free, gluten-free and cholesterol-free. The company also claims the product tastes more like milk than other plant-based milk alternatives. Plus, its overall environmental impact is substantially lower than that of conventionally produced milk, according to a preliminary report by The University of the West of England..................................

(43,049 posts)I usually get almond milk, but this stuff was on sale and tastes pretty much the same.
Now, milk created in a test tube is probably better for the planet than a bunch of nut trees grown to make milk, but either one is better than herds of cows hooked up to milking machines.
But what's with the "gluten free" silliness? Besides well over 90% of the population not being bothered at all by gluten, milk doesn't have any to begin with.
(And soy milk? Blecchh.)

(7,277 posts)The dairy farmers definition of milk is too narrow. Labelling soy and nut extracts as milk is novel and misleading is more to the point. My 2c.

(25,873 posts)or anything that isn't actual milk.
Likewise the gluten free nonsense.
There's a lot of bullshit out there about such stuff, which I have no patience for.
I'm kind of reminded of those who try to tell me that non fat non dairy sour cream is exactly like the real stuff. They are completely wrong. I have no trouble telling the difference, and if they can't tell the difference, then they have no business telling the rest of us anything at all. "I can't believe it's not butter" is another. Yes, I can believe it's not butter, and if you can't you have non working taste buds.
A couple of decades ago I realized that nutritionists apparently could not tell the difference between, say real full fat sour cream and low fat yogurt, and realized that I simply could not rely on them for anything at all. If you try to tell me that low fat yogurt is just as tasty as full fat sour cream, I know that you cannot taste the difference between the two and I cannot rely on you for anything whatsoever in this area. Sort of like those who think crochet and knitting are the same. Look it up. They are vastly different.
Oh, and butter vs margarine. Butter tastes good and is good for you. Margarine tastes like crap and is really and truly bad for you, which is something I figured out several decades before that became official.

(8,383 posts)It saves calories: 30 vs. 60 for skimmed milk, and the almond milk has more body to it.

(15,805 posts)but they leave an unpleasant grassy aftertaste, like I'd just chewed a handful of lawn clippings. I really wanted to like the stuff but it's so unpalatable I just can't drink it.
